I am a new resident of canada and i am thinking of stopping payment to credit cards in the USA?
i was informed by credit agencies in the United states that canada and United states credit union or collection agencies don't communicate. So if i stopped payment there would be no way for them to collect. Does anyone have any information on this subject. I do not plan to live in the United states for many yrs now . I am married and i am starting a new life in canada and i only plan to visit the states now and then. So my credit is not important in the USA and my credit in the states is not transferable so i am pretty much starting over.
I would really like information from anyone with experience in this area, i haven't stopped payment on anyting yet but i am thinking about it .

I worked at a bank during college. If a person was applying for a loan and hadn't lived in the country for a certain amount of years, then a credit report was obtained from whereever they lived before (a lot of people from Canada in the area). Presumably, financial institutions in Canada would have the same options, so they could still see your US credit history.

I guess the ethics of paying back what you borrowed is not that important to you? That's sad.

why be dishonest? you ran up the bills, pay them.

As soon as Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover discover you run away to a foreign country with their money you will be reported to Interpol as an International Fugitive and they will hunt you down and if you ever go back to the United States of America you could be arrested and convicted. Also if you are arrested in Canada they will send you back to the United States of America to face trial.

Trust me.
You don't want to mess with a Fortune 500 Company.

I suggest you to keep paying until you are debt free. Also if you can send them more than the minimum payment.

I think that you are missing the legal implications about this one. Especially if you come back into the states. Since you are not talking about a political crime, I think there is a distinct possibility that Canadian law officials would cooperate with your apprehention in some way. Even if nothing happens, if you moved back, I think you'd wished you'd never done that.

Even if it is true that the reporting agencies don't share information, certainly the credit card agencies do. Visa will share information with visa and master card with master card all over the world. Furthermore, what you are proposing is to become a crook. To borrow money and buy goods with the promise of paying, and then to simply refuse to pay. That is dishonest. You agreed to pay and you should pay. If you think that your credit card company will simply let it go and make no effort to hale you into court simply because you are in Canada, you are mistaken.

Good question, but I don't have an answer for you. Sounds like another good reason to move north (if you can be someone who will default on a loan).

Why dont you do debt consolidation? That way you are not being dishonest but you are also catching a break on your bills. Debt consolidation can reduce your bills up to 50% and the credit card companies wont file suit on you. It is better to resolve your problems instead of running away!
