How may a debt collector contact you?

Totally. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If you tell the creditor that your employer prohibits you from receiving such calls then they must stop, or they can be fined by the Federal Trade Comission.
You might have to notify the creditor in writing, but try telling them that. These guys know very well what the rules are, and if you tell them to stop calling at work they probably will immediately. Just hearing your story makes my blood boil - they should know better!

A creditor can call an employee at home, several times a day if they aren't answering, as long as the calls are between 8 am and 9 pm.
They can also call that person at their place of employment unless the employee or the employee's supervisor has specifically told them that personal phone calls are not allowed by employees.
They can also call any relatives, friends, references, etc. as long as their call is limited to trying to get information on how to get in touch with that employee.
From the information you have given here, the creditor is actually breaking the law if you have advised them that the employee is not allowed to receive personal phone calls.
You should let the employee know about the situation and advise him to remind the credit company about the workplace regulations. As for the creditors that are calling, here is what to say:
"...As part of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, please be aware that company management is requesting that you do not try to contact our employee while they are at the office. It is disruptive to our workplace, and we will have to initiate legal proceedings if you continue to do so. The employee will be made aware of your attempts to contact them, and we expect you to address the issue with them outside of our office hours..."
It is in everyone's best interest to not have the employee lose his job due to these personal calls, or else that person may never be able to pay the creditor's bills. |

They can not call you legally when asked to stop calling and remove the business number from their account. First ask the name of the person that is calling, company name and contact number to reach them. After obtaining this information ask them not to call back or ask to speak with their supervisor. Do notify them that you will report it to the BBB and that should make them stop. Or if their is an HR person their at that time talk to them and transfer the HR rep the call. I have been in that position before and it is a headache, be patient it will go away. |

The creditors are only trying to do their jobs.
If they are harrassing you, I would tell the owner of the company you work for. Perhaps the owner of the company should approach this employee in influencing him to pay back what is owed. It's the right thing to do! |

They can call the workplace, BUT as soon as you tell them that they can NOT call him/her at work, they have to stop! It is illegal to call a workplace after being told not to call there anymore. |

It is legal for a debt collection agency to call a workplace looking for an employee UNTIL the employee sends them a written request specifically stating that the collector does not have permission to contact them at work. Have this employee send a certified letter (so you have proof that the collector received it). Once the collector has this letter, if they continue to call they are in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
However, if this creditor is a private party, not a debt collection agency, they are not governed by the FDCPA. |

I would say notify the person who is trying to be reached. I believe it is their responbility to take care of the issue, as it has nothing to do with the workplace.
Tell the creditors to stop calling and/or tell the persons boss that it needs to be handled. |

I would talk to your supervisor/boss. In my case, the guys are rarely in the office so if they call I just mention this is not the best number to reach them at because they are on the field and rarely come into the office. That helped me out tremendously..... |

I relieve on our board at lunch time-I forward the calls to our HR dept. You really should not get involved in them. |

Report it to your manager or you might find yourself in trouble for trying to put an end to these calls all by yourself. Employers don't approve of employees with bad credit sought after by creditors. |

It IS illegal for them to call anyone at work, when they call next time ask who it is specifically (they have to tell you by law) and proceed to tell them it is illegal for them to continue their calls-- I would have your company write them a letter with proof of this law, even if the call doesnt work-- Good luck |

it seems to me that whoever they are trying to reach gave them their work number at some point...so talk to them as well. they could have done it to avoid them since they know personal calls aren't allowed and that you wouldn't put the call through. |

Unfortunatley there is no law forbiding this. You can tell them that the employee is unable to take personal calls. Other than that you can have the employee take the call. I would tell the creditor that they no longer work there. That will end your problem! good luck, I HATE creditors. |
