Jeremy J | I am about to make a $500 purchase. Should I get a credit card to buy it? (I am 18 and need credit)? |
So would it be a good idea to go to my bank and apply for a student credit card. And then use it on my purchase, and then pay they bill in full right when it comes?
Will this help my credit? Additional Details To everyone: I said I could pay the bill right when it comes. Money isn't the issue. I have thousands of dollars in my bank account.
I just want to get my credit score up. |

Yes, it would help your credit, if you make payments on time for a few months. Make sure you keep your balance under 30%. That means if you are making a $500 purchase, try to get at least a credit limit of $1500-$2000 .
I would NOT make a $500 purchase on $500 credit limit card. |

Yes, that's a good start, make ur $500 purchase with a credit card, then make higher monthly payments than what is minimum, so u will pay it off faster. Do not pay it all off on ur first bill. The credit bureaus` want to see how diligent u r in making ur monthly payments on time. That way, in the future if u want to buy on credit, they have a record showing u make ur payments in a timely manner, not late. If u pay ur balance in its entirety with the first bill, then they can`t establish a credit record for u. Don`t purchase anything else on ur first credit card until u pay down ur balance. Later u can make another credit card purchase, repaying in higher monthly payments before the due date, don`t be late and that's how u build a good credit report.Eventually ur interest rate will drop when u prove ur a good credit risk. Just be careful with credit cards, it is very easy to go overboard with plastic. Stay within ur means. |

Now is a good time to start building your credit. One purchase with a credit card isn't going to give you good credit right away. What you need to do is establish a couple credit card accounts and pay your bills on time. Then your credit score should go up. |

Yes, this would be a good move and MAKE SURE you pay it as soon as the bill comes in. |

I'm not sure you "need" credit... you need food, water.... shelter... but credit?
what if you saved for that $500 purchase? NO credit required. :) |

Dont apply for a credit card as this will encourage you to overspend hence buy purchase that you dont really want use cash to make this $500 purchase of yours I find when I go shopping without my credit card I am more careful with my spending as it is money I can see where when I use my credit card it gives me the conception that I have an unlimited source of funds |

Credit cards are rotten...... I advise trying to just pay the thing if you can....... If you can't trust the vendor then don't buy it. |

Not a good idea, i started with a credit card at 18 and you can not help but spend it. The minimum credit limit is usually $1000 - $1500 -so you will feel the need to spend more. I maxed out mine in a week and said I ll pay it back just like you are. its not worth getting for one thing even if you pay it back. If you need a credit card to purchase something, that is a different story but there is many things you can do such as get a visa debit card! They are fantastic as you are spending your own money on the credit card and there is no interest etc. This is a real credit card that uses your savings - try that. If you get a real credit card you will be charged up to 20% in interest so that $500 purchase will become $600 and for what? Cos you couldn't wait another week to get this item - surely you can lay by! hope this helps |

As long as you can pay off the card immediately - it negatively impacts your credit score to owe more than 30% of your credit limit on any credit card or line of credit (excepting car loans, installment loans or mortgages).
Given that you will be able to pay off the balance immediately (and you do not have to wait until you get the bill) it would be a smart idea. Please just be cautioned that it only takes one credit card to screw up your credit permanently. Remember to never just make the minimum payment, and try to make it a rule for yourself to only make the purchase on your card if you could pay for the purchase - IN FULL - out of pocket. And always pay the bill in full, keep the money in a savings account if necessary.
Hope this helps & good luck. |
