Information guru | I am adding my wife as an authorized user on my credit card. Will this affect my great credit score? |
I have great credit. It is above 720. I always pay everything on time. I have a mortgage and no credit card debt, no school loans, and I am about to pay off my car loan. My wife has bad credit. I think she has a credit score in the upper 500s. I want to add her as an authorized user on my credit card so she can buy groceries and gas on my rewards credit card that I pay off every month. If she has bad credit, and I have good credit, will my good credit score be affected by simply making her an authorized user on my card? |

no... only if she misuses the card.
It *may* help her credit though if you pay off the card in a timely fashion. It is called "piggybacking" but I think they may be looking to end the benefits of piggybacking on a credit score. Her score could be helped positively if you open a new credit card under a joint account. |

Auth user on a credit card account, can mess up your credit score really fast...if they abuse the credit card, late payments, over the credit limit.
when you call to have her added to your credit card, tell them you want her to have a spending limit, and you set the limit
since you are the primary card holder, you are the only one that can set the limit, make changes on your account....and only one that can activate her card..
she may be the wife, but be careful, that your credit does not get messed up...alot of times the auth user will over spend, but it reflects on you only, you are the primary card holder and it is only reported on you to the credit bureau,.

we deal with this same thing every day on divorces, where husbands or wives are added as a auth user and mess up the credit....just be careful and set her limits on the card. |

It will affect your credit. Same as when you get married. |

No, as long as you maintain control of paying the card on time, your good credit will not be effected. The only effect of adding her as an authorized user, is that she may make charges on that card. Nothing else changes. |

Adding your spouse as an authorized user won't really affect your credit score. Nor will it help hers -- the rules have changed and authorized users no longer get the piggyback benefits.
As long as you continue to pay the card in full every month and your wife doesn't run up a huge balance, it will be perfectly fine. |

I strongly recommend that you don't do it. You have to think about what could happen. What if you divorce? What if she maxes out the card and she disappears? It could ruin your credit and life. It may sound cruel and it may seem to her as if you don't trust her, but you have to be careful and take care of yourself. |

trust me, it can effect your credit score. Depend on how your partner is using your credit. Just like the other said, if you two were divorcing, she can leave you get you into huge debts. This is usually why divorce rate is so high then before, mostly its about financial. I'm not saying that you two will divorce but just be aware. |
