I applied for an additional student loan for this coming school year, but I have been declined by every lender due to a lack of credit history. I thought I could get a credit card to help add to my credit history so that if I need a student loan next year, I will have a better chance of receiving one. I have applied for student credit cards (since they are specifically for people with little to no credit history) but I cannot get one because of a lack of credit history!?! I don't have the cash on hand to deposit for a secured credit card...what can I do to build credit?????

Federally insured student loans do not require any credit history. You should be looking for a Stafford Loan or a Perkins Loan.

Keep looking around for a credit card. They can be very important to establish credit history. As long as you are a student there has to be someone who will accept your credit card application. If you wanted a loan this year you might have to have a cosigner with good credit history. That is, just until you establish your own credit. |

Nellie Mae by Sally Mae will give student loans most of the time without a co-signer, even with no credit history. I got one from them. And their interest rates really aren't bad. |

What you're applying for is a student loan that is not guaranteed by the federal government. There are no credit checks for Federally guaranteed student loans, it doesn't matter if you have a credit history or not. Go to the web site to apply online. You can get a Stafford loan, Perkins loan, or a William D. Ford (better known as DIRECT) loan. New student loans have interest rates at 6.8%.
Your parents can also help you out by getting a PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) loan for you.
Make sure you consolidate your student loans so your interest rate is fixed.
The best way to establish credit is to get 1 secured credit card. Pay it on time and try to maintain a "0" balance on it, pay it all.

The best way to start credit is buying jewelry. They approve almost anyone. Little or no credit. It doen't matter if the item is $100 or more. Get credit for that item and then just make sure you make your payments. It can me as little as $20 a month. You will build your credit and get jewelry out of it. |

What I suggest doing is going to say JC Penny's or Dillards or some clothing store that you really like and applying for a card there. That will open up a credit history for you...good luck!! |
