To summarize the previous answers, here is what I think you should do:
1. If you have the money, contact a tax attorney. They may be able to help you cut the tax bill down to size.
2. They will take payments, however, there is interest and penalties.
3. If you do nothing, they can put a freeze on your accounts and your kids accounts (I've read about this in the newspapers, so it is not an urban legend).
4. What ever you do, don't ignore any of the notices you receive for long, as bureaucrats hate to be ignored (I used to work for Customs for 32 years, so I know how that works).
Whatever you do do, don't delay. |

The best way to find out is to call and ask. With a large sum like that though, you might want to contact a tax lawyer. |

Yes it can be negotiated. For $60,000 if you don't eventually take care of this they will be coming after you for payments. Unlike other debt they can take property or garnish your wages in every state.
The best thing to do is see if they will take what is known as an "Offer In Compromise". For this amount you defiantly should seek legal counsel who specializes in dealing with the IRS. |

Some good answers here...Just wanted to add a warning....DO NOT use any of the firms advertised on cable TV that allege that they can settle IRS debts for pennies on the dollar. These firms do not solve your tax problems...they exploit them for their own financial benefit. The IRS generally does not make deals like with credit card companies because they don't have to as they have so much power. However, there is one form of negotiation called an Offer in Compromise...see links below
Regarding the posting below: The IRS rarely makes "pennies on the dollar" settlements and when it does, it involves extreme circumstances: i.e. your home and/or business was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina....This is an example of where the IRS would grant an OIC for a substantial settlement... |

You may with luck get them to remove some penalty and interest if you have a large amount of money to give them now. They are always willing to make a payment schedule as long as you start paying. Give them a call or go to your local IRS agents office!! |

Yes you can make payments for pennies on the dollar.. There really good with that. Call them they like for you to call them. Don't try to hide, because we all know they will find you and when they do its a whole lot worse. |
