First, stop using the cards. Cut 'em up. Second, make a budget and see what is the maximum you can pay each month. Pay the highest interest rate card the most per month until it's paid off...then go to the second highest rate card. Or, if no collateral loan rates are lower than most of your credit card rates, go get a loan and pay them off. Then, don't ever use credit cards again.

Edit: And, don't file for bankruptcy. It will affect you for years and years (sometimes employers look at your credit record, and that isn't desirable - - it makes you seem irresponsible)...plus, it's a cop-out.

I've been posting rather frequently here over the past few months. I've also tried many times to warn people about exactly what you are going through.

Debt consolidation is a good idea, but comes with many dangers. Mainly, too many people consolidate, then turn around and run up their now-empty credit cards. Now you are in twice the debt.

I won't repeat the advice from the previous answers. Those are obvious, and I'm gonna bet you are already doing that.

I don't have enough information to give any good advice, but I'll be general.

You have two choices. Bankruptcy, or trying to reduce your debt.

The advantage of bankruptcy (in your case) is that you don't own a car or home. Depending on how much money you are earning with those two jobs, you may qualify for a Chapter 7. If yo earn a lot, you will be forced into a Chapter 13 "Wage Earner Plan" where you will have to pay back a portion of those debts. If that is the case, you will be placed on a very strict budget. You think it's bad now, wait to you see what you will be put under. And you can expect to be on this budget for the next 3-5 years.

About the comments about having a ruined credit history...what looks better. A bankruptcy, or several outstanding debts and judgements? Both look terrible, and both stay with you for several years.

If your debt isn't that great, try contacting your creditors and negotiate a payment plan. Tell them you are considering bankruptcy, and with their help you would like to avoid it. See if they can reduce your balance and/or freeze the interest and penalties.

Even under this plan, you can expect a rough few years.

If they won't work with you, look at it this way. Lets say you owe $20,000, and the most you can spend toward your debt each month is $200. It's gonna take you 10 years to pay off the debt. You get to deal with bad credit, plus all the harrassment that goes along with debt collections.

With the bankruptcy route, you still have bad credit but the harrassment goes away, and you only have to put up with it for 3-5 years.

Don't think I'm trying to talk you into bankruptcy! I'm just showing you both sides and showing you options.

Go to the library and check out "Financial Peace" or Financial Peace Revisited" (or ANYTHING) by Dave Ramsey. This guy was a MILLION dollars in the hole in real estate when the banks started calling to collect. Since everything was in R.E., he had NO cash. He got out and now he teaches others how. Check out his website (listed below in sources).

Several of his ideas have already been suggested (getting a second job - which you already have, holding a garage sale), but he's got TONS of good advice from the best school - experience!

I hope this helps. I know it's tough because I've been there (more than once, I'm afraid). But we're on-track now, thanks to Dave. I can't say enough good things about this guy. He saved my marriage!

Gosh I know thats really a tough spot and we all go through it once in a while. The best couple tidbits of advice I can give is to

#1 cut up any credit cards! No matter what, nothing is so important to get deeper into the hole. If you cant pay cash you dont need it. Find some other way to save for it and buy later when its on sale. If possible do a balance transfer on a lower interest rate on what you do owe, often you get the 1st 6 months interest free. Maybe a 2nd job would help pay that off (work from home on your computer?)

#2 Look into a consumer debt counseling, at a legitimate one the people volunteer to help people in your situation and they wont rip you off. They can put you on a budget and work with your creditors so you can make lower payments and sometimes eliminate a high interest. My mom is working with one now, she sends x amount per month and they pay the bills for her. It works and its piece of mind while keeping a decent credit rating.

#3 Is there a hobby you can do to make money on the side? Sell misc. stuff you dont need on Craigslist for quick cash, its easier than a garage sale and your stuff will sell quick with pictures. I do this anytime I need some quick money in a hurry and it never fails.

I hope this helps & keep your chin up, it will get easier!

photoguy1967
cut up your credit cards, use cash only. sell all your stuff on ebay, get a paypal card and use that for stuff.

Cancel your Cable, only use one phone (cell or home) cancel the other. get a bike or bus pass. find a better paying job. move home for a year. marry a rich guy. stop shopping. sell your eggs to a medical fertility clinic.

I would call the credit card companies, tell them your situation. They will lower your interest rates. Then make the lowest payment and sanything extra you can afford. Or you can transfer all your balances to 1 card, then pay a little more than that min. payment.

If you live somewhere where it is warm all the time I would just buy a motorcycle. As expensive as gas is these days that would be the way to go. A friend of mine has an older 90's Mazda B2000 pickup that has over 350000 miles on it. These pickups last forever. He hasn't had any major problems with it at all.

canastafairy2003
leave society and move into a cave where no credit collectors can find you lol
But seriously try calling one of those companies that help you consolidate your debt without a loan. They can eliminate interest rates and work out payment plans with the creditors.

Beside going to Credit Counsellor again you could go to your bank manager. Sound like you have too many bills and not enough money. You may have to cut up some of those credit cards. They can be too tempting to use as soon as they is any room on them. Between your bank manager and the credit counsellor they will help you set up a financial budget. You may have to find other ways to cut expenses.

zkay69
The first thing I would suggest is take a long look at why you keep following the same bad money habits?
Then pick the credit card that has the lowest interest rate and transfer all of your other balances to that card. Then you want to close all the other credit accounts keeping maybe one/two for case of emergencies.

You should also get a copy of credit report(s) all three with your scores. Then add up all of your true debts. Anything on your report that you are truly responsible for(anything older than seven years should not still be there, or accounts that are not yours you will have to send all 3-credit reporting agencies a letter of dispute) Once you add up all the debt that is yours figure out what you can pay comfortably and set out calling your debtors and making payment arrangements. If you have medical bills you can pay as little as $10-15 every two weeks until you get some of the other bills paid for, then pay them more until it is all paid off. Look at it in a realistic time frame for you payment schedule.

Cut as much expenditures as you can: bring your lunch to work, cook at home. cell phone, cable.... cut as much as you can. Any penny you save, pay the credit card.
Try to get extra income from a part time job, or weekend job....
