I hate to sound like a broken record, but yes you need to get a credit card. Store cards or secured credit cards are a good place to start if you cannot get an unsecured card. Use it for all of you normal every day purchases like gas, groceries, bills, and even rent if you can (I had an apartment that took credit cards). Pay it off EVERY month. After a while you can probably get a rewards card of some kind. If you do use the card for everything (I still do) then you basically get paid to use your money if, and only if, you never carry a balance. Never carry a balance, never. I look at it as a way to make my every day spending money work for me. If you think you can use a credit card on a rainy day, don't. Save money for that. After about year of having a solid history you may qualify for a small personal loan. Do it. Even if it is for $1000 you need to have that in your history. Make the payments early every month and then pay it off a few months early. Establish your ability to make regular payments and pay off debts early. That is really all you need to do. Don't be late, don't pay less than the minimum.
Never carry a balance, live within your means, and do not make money the center of you life.
Good luck...

Start with a secured credit card that you pay off in full each month. Shows revolving credit in good standing - this is what creditors want to see.

That was me, exactly! I'll tell you what I was told at the bank when I was turned down for a mortgage. The loan officer told me to get a credit card. Just a store card. (you'll qualify- I did!) Use it when you go there and pay it off every month. Don't charge over half your credit limit on it EVER. This will put 'good' marks on your credit for you. I resisted getting a credit card until I was over 30. Finally I had to admit that in order to get a decent credit score, you have to use credit. I still only have that one store card, though.

I swear I was in your EXACT position right down to the amount of medical bills owed.

The bank told me that if I did this it should build my credit enough to buy a house this spring, but my medical bills have been paid off for over a year. I guess we'll see how it turns out!

Good luck to you!

Get a credit card, use it, and pay it off every month. Or make large purchases, and show that you can pay them off. It's time to get a credit card, because this is the quickest way for building credit little by little.

Maybe get a store credit card or one with very low limits. Buy something very cheap, and pay it off every month.

You can write a letter to the company that reported the negative items on your credit report and ask for them to be deleted since you have paid the accounts. Since they are the ones who are reporting it they can also delete it.

First thing you need to do (if you haven't already) is order your credit report. You get 1 free one a year. Order it from all three credit bureaus.

Then go through and make sure all the information is correct. If you paid your outstanding medical bills you can request that they take them off. Sometimes they won't for 7 years but some places will...it doesn't hurt to ask.

Then you need to get some credit. Even if it's a small amount. You need to show you can handle payments.

Start saving up money for a down-payment.

Avoid adjustable rate mortgages (ARM's) - if they are still allowed.

Avoid taking out credit cards, or other loans unecessarily.

Maybe get one or two cards - for gas & other things that you are going to buy anyway, but pay the balances off consistently when you get paid.

Get a loan for a car that you can afford - make sure to take into account money for maintaining it.

Be careful - credit is a dangerous thing.

Go to annualcreditreport.com, check for any and all errors. If there are any errors, dispute them.

Next, go to a local bank and get a secured credit card, make ontime payments.

>>PS: Getting a contracted cellphone will not help your credit in any way.

From the Federal Trade Commission website:
"The first step toward taking control of your financial situation is to do a realistic assessment of how much money you take in and how much money you spend. Start by listing your income from all sources. Then, list your "fixed" expenses — those that are the same each month — like mortgage payments or rent, car payments, and insurance premiums. Next, list the expenses that vary — like entertainment, recreation, and clothing. Writing down all your expenses, even those that seem insignificant, is a helpful way to track your spending patterns, identify necessary expenses, and prioritize the rest. The goal is to make sure you can make ends meet on the basics: housing, food, health care, insurance, and education.
Your public library and bookstores have information about budgeting and money management techniques. In addition, computer software programs can be useful tools for developing and maintaining a budget, balancing your checkbook, and creating plans to save money and pay down your debt.
If you've ever applied for a credit card, a personal loan, or insurance, there's a file about you. This file is known as your credit report. It is chock full of information on where you live, how you pay your bills, and whether you've been sued or arrested, or have filed for bankruptcy. Consumer reporting companies sell the information in your report to creditors, insurers, employers, and other businesses with a legitimate need for it. They use the information to evaluate your applications for credit, insurance, employment, or a lease."

Hello,

I live in the US and i really have never seen goodness shown to me this
much in my life as i am a struggling mum with three kids and i have been going
through really rough times in my life and my name is Helen
Peters and in all this hard times, a worse incident occured in my life as i
lost my job which was my only means of survival and things became really bad as
i had bills to pay and my last son suffered a knee injury incurred when he fell
from a tree house and the doctors informed me that he needed a surgical
operation for his knee so he could walk again and at this point, life was
useless to me as i have no family and no one to run to and each night, i will
sit down and cry till the break of dun until one day, i read an advert on yahoo
answers of man that stated that he could help people in my shoes with loans and
in my desperate situation, i had no choice but i had to try and so shocking and
suprising, it was like an impossibility becoming a reality, i got a loan of
$75,000 USD even with my bad credit within 48 hours and my sons surgery was done
and thank GOD it was successful and now, i am okay and living in comfort with my
kids and i said to my self, i have never ever seen this kind of wonder in life
and i decided i will tell it to the whole wild world and i need every one to
thank GOD for Mr Patrick Harvey, the man GOD used to rescue me and my family
even when all hope had been lost and gone and i will say to every one, no matter
how dark and sinful the world is today, there are still GOD fearing and reliable
people on earth and if you are in my former situation or require a loan
legitimately, i will advice you contact this loan lender and you can reach him
via patrickharvey12@yahoo.com and i want you all to pray for this man for me.
