I am trying to clean up my credit. I was wondering what is the fastest way to get rid of it?
I have 5 credit accounts: $183, $1,027, $1,551, $4,300, $6,400. I just started working a little bit over a year now as soon as I got out of college. Is there anyone I could talk to about getting any information? I am trying not to stress myself out over it but around this time next year I would like to get my first car and I am afraid that I wont be able to get it because of my credit.

Also, I am trying to get a new car in the future sometime next year. How do car dealers look at people who are trying to clean up their credit? I do not want a co-signer or anything like that. I want everything to fall on me.

To boost your credit score:
The first thing you will need to do is call the three major credit reporting agencies and request a free copy of your credit report.

www.equifax.com
www.experian.com
www.transunion.com

Then once you get those in the mail (7-10 days) there will be a dispute form attached to the reports. Fill those out for every negative account on your report regardless. Fax, mail go online whatever it takes to get those submitted as quickly as possible. Then those companies must answer your dispute within 30 days or it is removed from your credit report completely. So that will eliminate some things, hopefully.

Then make sure you pay all your revolving accounts to below 50% of your credit limits.

Make sure that you make all your payments no more than 20 days from the date it is due.

Good Luck!

You need to work the debt snow ball. See www.daveramsey.com

And don't borrow money to buy a car, you'll be in debt until you die. And you've already begun to do just that.

I calculate $13,461 in credit card debt. Coincidentally, the average debt load of credit counseling clients is roughly $14,000.

You could probably benefit from budget counseling through a reputable credit counseling agency. They may be able to help you with strategies you can use on your own to eliminate debt. If you are having trouble paying more than the minimum payments, then you may wish to ask about a debt management plan.

Pay off the card with the highest interest first. Pay more than the minumum payment each month and try not to accumulate any more debt. Keep one of the credit cards for emergencies. Only charge when necessary. If possible get a weekend job to help eliminate the debt.

If these bills are current and not yet in collections, then there is a different plan of action you can take. Just some common sense stuff like transferring balances to combine credit, paying down high interest cards first, things like that. Takes a bit of planning.

If the collectors are already after you, just read through my past answers, as I've covered this pretty much several times already. Will be happy to respond in email if you want to give some specifics to your problem.

Smiley....just one comment.

In the past we have had "professional collection agents" insist that it was against the law to delete negative credit items from your history, even if they are valid! I've posted over and over that they can do it, there is no law preventing it! They said I was wrong and I didn't have a clue about what I was talking about.

Now you state that it certainly can be done. Was this just a wild stab in the dark and I got one thing right? Or maybe I know a lot more then you think? At least you confirm that all these professionals here don't know everything....I'll accept that much.

1. Get a copy of your credit report - and all 3 are listed online.See how you look to the outside world.
Work on solving any issues that are listed.

2. Pay each credit card off, above the minimum - ahead of the due date.

3. Don't close any credit card.

4. Try to use only 1 credit card, and put the others aside.

5. When you get control of your credit, keep a good payment plan, and trying to pay off double payments, ahead of time (even if it's a few days) will always work in your favor.

You could probably use credit counseling. Are you defaulting on the payments to these accounts? Are you able to pay more than the minimum monthly payments? A credit counselor would sit down with you and look at the interest rates you are paying. They might suggest that you begin by paying off the highest interest-rate-debt faster than the lower interest rate debt.
Before you go shopping for a car, get your credit reports (they're free once a year) from TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.
http://www.annualcreditreport.com/
Also consider getting your credit score ($16 at http://wwwmyfico.com ) so you will see what your potential lenders see when they get your reports. This is worth getting as the report tells you what factors influence your credit score and makes suggestions on how to raise it. A score above 700 is considered good; below 600 tells lenders that you may have trouble repaying a loan.
To improve your credit rating,
1) make payments on time
2) don't max out your credit cards; ideally balances should be no higher than 35% of the credit limit
3) don't close out old accounts and consolidate everything onto a new card. Don't be too quick to close out your oldest accounts. Even if you don't use it, leave it open. Longevity is a + in credit scoring.
4) don't open up several new accounts at once. This suggests that you may be having financial trouble.

dont close accounts , dont charge anything else, and try to pay balances down as much as possible

Credit Counseling is not something I suggest getting involved in. When a lender sees that you are involved in consumer credit counseling service, it is an automatic denial. Here is what I suggest. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com and request your credit report from each repository (Equifax, Experian and Trans Union). Start with the smallest account and pay as much as you can towards it until it is paid off (meanwhile, keep making minimum payments on the remaining accounts). Then work your way up to the next and so on and so forth. Before you know it, you have made all of your payments on time and the balances will be paid, therefore boosting your credit rating. Be sure to not cancel the cards, keep them open. At all times you should have a minimum of 4 open and active tradelines that are positively affecting your credit. Good luck and i hope this helps. if you need any more advice, drop me a line. rdbianco4@yahoo.com

Ok first things first. Check to see what the statute of limitations for credit reporting is in the state you live in. If it is past statute you can report it to all three major credit reporting bureaus and have them dropped off.

Also dispute anything that is not valid, correct or was not of your doings. If you have anything on there that you didnt do...file a police report and forward a copy to the creditors and bill collectors.

If they are not past statute and are valid...you need to get them paid. A credit institution will charge you money to do the same thing you can do.

Start by calling the collection agency try and cut deals to settle the accounts. Some agencies will take as low as 30% to settle. Others will request more. Very rare but some creditors will not accept a settlement at all. Try and make them to agree to delete from your credit report as well. Some agencies may require that you pay the entire balance for them to delete it. Others will agree to delete with the receipt of the settlement amount.

Get the deal in writing before you pay and than more on to the next one. One by one...next thing you know its done.
