Problem is I cannot get a physical address to send a certified letter. I called them and asked for one they said there wasn't an address that I could send mail to have a person sign for it. Has anyone ever sent a certified, registered, return/receipt, or over-night letter to Discover Card? |

Send it to the PO Box. The Post Office will put a yellow slip in the PO box and whom ever picks up the mail will sign for your letter. |

You don't need to waste time/money with a certified mail to make settlement offers...Get their fax # and fax the offers to them: Free fax service at: http://www.myfax.com/free/
Avoid using any lengthy, legalistic and demanding “form” settlement letters available for various sources. These letters will get thrown away when received. Keep settlement offers in this format:
I am willing to resolve this issue for $ [x] if your firm will send me a signed agreement on your letterhead confirming that this account will be "Paid in Full" upon receipt of this amount from me. Upon receipt of a signed confirmation letter, I will send you a USPS money order for this amount.

Creditors only settle on debt that's way past due....they won't settle on current debt
- Only make settlement offers if you have the money saved up to pay up front...they won't do settlements if you can only pay in small amounts over several months/years.
- Settled/forgiven credit card debt is treated like earned income by the IRS. For settled debt, they'd issue a 1099C form and you'd have to add that to your earned income next year and pay whatever additional taxes.
- If your account has completely defaulted, you need understand that paying the account after a default/charge off will not fix or repair your credit rating. |

A word of warning: I am told that Discover is notorious for refusing to settle Credit Card accounts for less than the full value and will sue immediately after default. |

My Take on It

I would think that if you are at a point where you are *negotiating* your debt with Discover, it has been written off and sent to a collection agency, and they are the ones you need to get the address from. |

Use the correspondence address listed on your statement. You can send certified, return receipt letters and post office overnight letter to any PO box. However, it pretty much is a waste of your money to pay that extra postage.
Unless your account is severely past due and about to be charged off, they are very unlikely to consider any settlement. There is no incentive for them to take less than the full balance. But even if you do get them to accept a settlement, the account will be reported to your credit report as charge off/settled -- a negative. You will also get a 1099 and will have to include the forgiven portion on your income tax return.
You are much more likely to be able to work out a settlement for less with a collection agency. |
