Seven years. But make sure everything on your credit report is actually yours. Credit Bureaus make mistakes, as do any other business, and there is always the possibility that something on your report is someone else's. It happened to my husband and it took about six months, but we got them taken off. |

If you pay them off in a consumer credit payback program, the bad ratings usually stay seven years, and are screened by potential credit issuers to see how you paid back the arrears. If you abandoned the owed accounts or are slower to pay off, the bad ratings stay ten years after pay off or are placed on P&L. Different state may have different policies, though. |

They stay on there until the account is paid off. Once it's paid off, the black mark will stay for about 7 years. If you declare bankruptcy, that will be on your record for 7-10 years. |
