You are not going to get one until you're 18 at least, then you have to pass a credit score. Good look for 48 months time! |

You are not allowed a credit card or even a full maestro or Cheque guarantee until you are over 18 and legally allowed to enter into a credit agreement.
wait till 18 to get the full maestro and guarantee card (an overdraft is legally credit too) and if you manage that well for 2 to 3 years the bank will offer you a credit card.
credit is a legal obligation and you are not allowed to enter legal agreements until you are over 18 and with the credit crunch banks are more cautious about offering new over 18's credit cards until they can prove they are able to manage credit. |

..anon..

you've got no chance, whatever bank you go to |

If I can offer you one piece of good advice, and it's the only advice you ever take: avoid all credit cards. They are not big and they are certainly not clever. Ask anyone who has one and 95% will tell you the same thing.
Try getting a part time job if you need some extra cash, that way you only spend what you actually have.
Unless youare talking about a debit card (where money is taken direct from your account instead of having to withdraw cash from the hole in the wall?) They are a whole different kettle o fish! |

You cannot get credit until you are 18. No credit cards, no loans, no mobile phone contracts no hire purchase. |

You can't have one until you're 18. However if you sign up with a bank like Barclays, they do Visa Electron and Visa debit cards. You can use these cards in many places that only accept 'credit cards'. |

You're too young dude. Don't waste your time with credit cards anyway. They're trouble. |

Hi, You have to be 18 to have a credit card, and then they will check your credit history, and because you will not have a credit history and if the economy keeps like it is now you will be very lucky to get a credit card. |

I'll say to you what I told my son and what I say to everyone who is thinking about getting their first credit (which you can't get until you're 18 anyway).
Think carefully before you do it because it's very, very easy to find yourself thousands of pounds in debt with these. That's because when you see something you really want, it's easy to tell yourself "I'll just bung it on the plastic and worry about it tomorrow", but do that a few times, keep paying the minimum monthly payment amount so that the interest keeps piling up and before you know it you're £10,000 in debt on one credit card and you start looking for a second one that you can use to pay off the first one and so it spirals out of control.
Don't do it, just rely on savings, it's the best way to go. |

You can't get a credit card at 16 but you may be able to get a debit card. Most debit cards can be used for buying things online etc but you can not spend more money than your account balance (unless you have an overdraft which you can't get at 16) so you can't end up in debt. |

even if they where to give you one (not a chance !), assuming you are gonna go to uni at some point. Getting in debt over silly things is unneccesary and trust me when you get to Uni, (for most) getting in debt is assured. |

You can get a debit card at 16 but not a credit card x |

if your under 16, the bank can give your parents the card, and it still has your name on it , but it can't be used until your over 18. you can keep storing money on the card aswell, and to apply for one just go to their website. www.rbs.co.uk/ - 14k -

you cannot get credit untill you are 18. They will not give you a credit card. Why?????????? because when you are 18 you become an adult by law and are then legaly responsible for any debt you get yourself in. You will have to wait till you are 18 im afraid! |

Do you mean a debit card? You should be able to get one of these at 16. Not a credit card though... |

You can have a debit card (Solo) so you can only spend whats in your account, but you cannot have a 'Credit Card' as you don't work full time as you are not old enough. |

You could probably get a DEBIT card for you account but there's no way you'll get a CREDIT card.
The difference is that with a DEBIT card you can only spend the amount you have in your account & with a CREDIT card you can buy things then pay the money back.
Try going into your branch and asking about it. |

I am 15 and have an account at Natwest, and have a card for it. If you can't get one then ask you parents if you can change banks so you can get this :)
And the reason everyone is saying you cant get a credit card until you're 18 is because you can't. You CAN get a debit card, where the money comes out of your account and you can't overspend. |
