I applied for a credit card, but have since changed my mind?
If I get approved, do I have so many days to change my mind and refuse it? Or do I have to accept it and then cancel it at a later time?
I don't have any credit cards and in a moment of weakness, I applied for a credit card. I have since realized it is not an answer to my problems and have decided to not accept it.
Need advice please!

If you get it just call the customer service # on the card and cancel the account, then cut the card up and toss it out.

MLE
Keep the card but don't use it. It is good for your credit score.

You could use it a little every month and pay it off right away that would be very good for your score.

boymv18
Dont activate the creditcard

Jen
Just call the number on the back of the card when you get it and tell them you want to cancel. No big deal. And always cut up your credit cards!

When you receive the card, send them a letter requesting the account be cancelled -- don't just phone. Request written verification that the account is closed and 0 balance. Sometimes closed credit card accounts come back to haunt you.

If there is no annual fee then keep the card open and don't use it. Or, better yet, use it occassionally and pay it off. It's good for your credit score. If you don't you'll feel sorry later in life when nobody will give you any credit. There's nothing wrong with having credit as long as you are responsible with it!

Amber
Here's my advice.. Credit is a GREAT thing to have.. If you think you can be responsible with a credit card, I say get it and keep it. Use it only for gas and groceries and then pay the balance off every month. If you can do this, your credit will improve and in no time at all you will be able to get your OWN car, boat, house, etc. because you've shown you are responsible!

xxhiyo
to use the credit card you have to call the place and "unlock" the card, meaning validate it. the card is invalid until you call them and validate the card. You can validate the card at any time, until it expires

just lock it away or give it to someone you trust wont go crazy with it, like your parents, and tell them not to use it or give it back to you. i think its too late to cancel because its a contract

The advice given here about keeping the card
and using it responsibly is good advice.

Avoid cash advances, NEVER use those checks
they send you, and pay it off without fail every
month.

For some things, a credit card is a necessity.

Travel for example is horribly inconvenient without one.
It's probably impossible to rent a car for example,
and all hotels want to have one on file when you
check in, even on a prepaid reservation.

But it is also very easy to overspend because
you're "Just putting it on the card". Avoid that
trap and you'll be fine.

Well the bad news is this, the card is yours upon approval. The good news is you are taking steps to building credit! Credit is required in life to get many things such as houses, cars and other things. The important thing is to be responsible for your actions with this card! It is not free cash, it is a 30 day loan that you will have to pay back, if you don't, interest will be assessed. It is not a bad thing, look at this as a stepping stone in life to establish yourself in the credit world

Reality Check
If you don't activate the card, there's nothing to close or cancel.

If you don't want it, when it comes in just cut it up and throw it away. The only trace of this, is that the card company put an inquiry on your credit report which will stay on for up to 2 years from the date you applied. This inquiry does not show details about the credit extension, and only impacted your score slightly (negatively).

As long as the one you choose has no hidden fees, just cut the card up when it comes in....
If there are annual fees, it may be a different story......

diamondroses88
if you get accepted you normally have to sign something first so don't worry too much. If not, all you do is cut it in half and send it back, with a letter informing them you've changed your mind.

mimzy
I did the same thing just recently. I was approved for the credit card and when I received it, I called the credit card company and cancelled it. They also took the inquiry off my credit report. It was much easier than I thought it would be.
