As long as you are a british citizen you should be able to get a basic bank account with no credit checks, try nationwide or hsbc, they offer good deals, in fact nationwide offer a solo card too as opposed to a cashcard |

you should try accountnow.com, they'll let you do on-line banking, and you can pay bills electronically, and send paper checks to the people that aren't set up for electronic banking, you'll also get a debit card, and can direct deposit into the account.
However this like other secondary banks charge higher fees, than the average brick and mortar like Bank of America. You should check the fee page of any bank you're considering, and determine if it's a viable option for you, but i'd say use it until you can fix your situation and then keep applying for a conventional saving/checking account with lower fees.

Find out exactly why you cant get an account. It might sound obvious but did you explain to the bank that you want the account so your employer can pay in your wages to it? I have opened savings accounts for a while with banks so as to get an account with them later on and it worked. In the meantime
you could try a post office account to have money paid in or ask to be paid by check. |

Nat west do an account called step account its very basic but you get a debit card too. I applied online and got it through in a week or just over. Just tell your employers you are trying to open an account and see if they can pay you cash. Apply now! |

Abbey National have a current account which they will issue a 'debit card' for -- but nothing else -- it is, I think, designed for people who have difficulty with other banks.

I've had this problem before, and I've had a checking account for a year now.
Apply online at Bank Of America. They offer free checking and they approving almost anyone. Just try it. trust me!
Also if you have a Trustco Bank near you they will open you an checking account.

I had the same problem. Go to Nationwide and open a cashsaver account. You will get your wages paid into it, but you can't have direct debits taken from it. When you have proven to the bank you can save a little, they will normally let you open a current account later. Good luck. It's what I did!!! |
