I lost my job two months ago and have only found odd jobs since. Im in college full time and have a car payment, 5 credit cards (havent used any for 3 years), phone, rent. No parents to support or assist me. Getting calls from collections 20 times a day. Please help because honestly I am feeling suicidal. Im only 24.

I know what it's like to be in your situation. Been there myself right after college. Had collection agencies calling my house nonstop and felt like scum...especially after all the crap they accused me of. First thing first. Write a letter asking them not to call you at home or work. Send it to all of the agencies. This is your right under the Fair Debt Act. It's not perfect, but it may get some of them off your back. If they don't comply, report their names to Federal Trade Commission. This is not a way to get out of paying your debt per se...just a way to get some of the pressure off. Contact a debt consolidator who can mediate payment to all your creditors. Basically, they negotiate terms, you pay them one payment, and they disperse the payment to your debtors. If it's to the point where you're feeling suicidal, maybe there needs to be some really hard choices made. Think about moving back to campus. If your boarding can be covered by grants or low interest loans, you can use your job money to pay off your credit card debts. Maybe even sell your car. I know this one would be an extreme idea, and I don't know how far away your job is, but I've known some fellow students who resorted to selling their vehicles and riding their bikes everywhere to either pay tuition or a debt. I wish I could be of more help. In my situation, they sold my debt to collection agencies who then settled with me later...took seven years before my credit was decent again. These days some companies are actually suing for garnishments, but with no steady income, I don't see how they could get away with anything beyond harrassment. Like I said, write the letters. Send them to every collection agency that's harrassing you. Now myself...I'm in another cc pickle (you'd think I'd learn from the first time) as my cc company hiked up my interest rate to horrific heights under some obscure byline in the original contract. And since I've got a full-time job (for now) they really can garnish my wages. Oh happy, happy, joy, joy. My advice. After the credit scare clears: stay away from credit cards. Period. |

Perhaps you should scale back the college and concentrate on finding full-time work for a while. When your finances are improved, resume the schooling. If you're getting collection calls, that means you were already in debt and living beyond your means. |

Priority:
1. rent, utilities, food
2. car
3. unsecured credit cards
If you call the car lender, you may be able to delay payment. Keep the roof over your head and let the credit cards slip.
Look around for anything that you can sell to raise money. You can sell blood/plasma for cash. Keep working those odd jobs. You may need to drop out of school and get a full time job to pay off your bills. |

Above everything else it is your responsibility to make sure you provide for your well being and shelter. Don't make credit card payments if it will cost you to skip out on basic needs.
Just based on the fact that credit CAN be re-established means that other people like you have been in this situation. Like you they may have tried their best in hard times. We all have stumbled at different times in life. Don't expect yourself to be perfect.
Take a few deep breaths and think of how you want your life to be. Then keep that vision in your mind and use it to understand there will be better days. You can have a better life by working hard in school and later in your career.
***one of the worst things in life is dying, missing a few credit card payments while you were in your twenties in college isn't as horrible****

Call the bank and ask if you could get a 2 or 3 month deferment. Just tell them you need it due to medical expenses not covered by your insurance. Don't drop out of college and if you're thinking about committing suicide, seek help immediately. We all go through it in our life time and do recover |

you need to go see one of those free credit councelling agents. they will seriously help you consolidate all of your debt.. into one payment. most places will send out a letter to all creditors letting them know that you are getting help to try and make things right... so they will hopefully stop calling you. then you can work to make those payments to the companies that you owe money to. there are ways to get out of it... another way is to call each and every company and tell them what is going on.. and they may give you a months pass or something of the sort to try and help you get back on your feet... just talk to the companies.. most of them will help you! DO NOT IGNORE THE CALLS! they see that as running from them, and that will just make it worse. |
