You can't go bankrupt on student loans!! Get over it. They will eventually collect all the money including interest one way or the other. Worst creditor in the world. Figure out how to pay it back as soon as you can. They are now garnisheeing Social Security Retirement and Disability Checks!! So even if you still owe something at age 65 they will continue collection against you. One of few debts you cant go bankrupt on. Even the IRS will negotiate with a taxpayer. Not the student loan folks full payment full interest. It will only get worse if you don't make payments.

You need to get a complete chart of the breakdown for the entire length of the loan. Most student loans are 10 years. And they have to be able to provide you that chart, I just can't remember the name of it. Amortization table I think. Then after you make sure that you still haven't finished paying the balance, they should be able to negotiate a different temporary payment method. I don't know who your lender is, but if it was a government loan, they do allow you to suspend payment for a period of time, only if you lose your job. You have to talk with the lender.

call them and request a forbearance form. They will stop your payments until you can get a job. Of course, interest will accrue, but its better than permanmently damaging your credit record.

They can take any future tax refunds you get, if you start working again they will garnish your wages, etc...been there done that...

theace0804
Well, considering that money *is* theirs, and you basically borrowed it, without giving it back, which means you stole it.

They could file a lawsuite, or potentially garnish your wages.

You should qualify for a deferment. I did that. You can get one up to a year. Call them and ask.

can you prove that u cannot work? then you should get a letter from your doctor explaining this and take it to some type of government office that gives assistance in these matters. if that is not an option then what about declaring bankruptcy, of course you need a lawyer for that but try to find someone who will do it pro bono.

lotuswarddave
if you really cant work you first need a doctors note saying you are unable to work. Then you need to file perment disablity in the state you live in then save a little bit of the disabblity shecks everyweek and file bankruptcy, sure your credit will suck for like 5 yeras but you wont owe that money

you need to call your student loan provider and tell them you are unemployed so that wont effect your credit they wont hold it against you if you dont have a job and you need time off to look for a new one call them asap

djren12
Ask the bank that loaned you the money for a defferment, it can last up to 6 months with no interest if u are unemployed. Gives you time to find another job.

jeff
The reason for the remaining balance is most likely due to interest accumulated over the 10 years. You didn't state why you are unable to work, but maybe you could qualify for unemployment or disability, thus supplementing some income and hopefully pay off some of that debt.
