Popeye | I co-signed on a car loan, it is not getting paid, how bad is it going to be on my credit if I don't pay it? |
two and a half years ago, I cosigned on a car loan for my wife....she left a couple of years ago, we divorced, she now won't pay for her car because she won't work. How bad will it be on my credit if I don't pay for the car? I assume it is just about the same as if I don't pay one of my own bills. She still has the car but has trashed it, so even if I pay for and get the car from her, I think I will never be able to get enough for it to pay it off.....what do you think?? |

Auto finance is what I do for a living and there is no difference between a primary signer and a co-signer when it comes to being liable for the loan payments.
If you don't make them it will look very bad on your credit, it will be the same as if you bought the car and then did not pay for it.
Get the car back, sell it for all you can get and take out a small loan for the balance and save you credit. |

it will affect your credit drastically. when you co signed you took on the responsibilty of paying in case she doesnt pay. it might be hard but pay for the car and then try to get your money back from her |

If you dont pay for it , it would be the same as you not paying for a car in your name primarily. Basically when you co-sign for someone they get the credit if its good...you get it if its bad. Try to talk to the finace company and see what your options are. My husband returned his car, the sold it at auction and he had to pay the diffrence ( a couple thousand in his situation). It would be be best to sell it yourself and pay the diffrence to save your credit...if possible. GET THE CAR BACK! If she isnt paying for it, she shouldnt still have it. |

when you co-sign on any loan, you are making yourself responsible for the loan if the party that you co-signed for does not pay the loan off. It'll look just as bad on your credit as any other loan or credit that you have. I suggest that you pay if you don't want it to ruin your credit. I suggest that you call the lien holder, explain the situation. Most creditors are willing to work with you. |

As far as your credit history report, score etc., this will look like 100% your loan. That's what a co-cigner is. You agree to take full responsibility if the primary doesn't perform. |

The same as if you had bought it yourself, because you agreed to take the finacial responsibility should she default on the loan. It will mess up your credit, it would be worth your while to try to pay that puppy off. What a bummer for you. |

it will be bad on your credit score. a car is bigger than your normal bills even credit cards. a car is like one step down from a house. if you dont pay it it will have a very negative impact on your credit score. i would pay the car out for your long term credit even if the car is garbaged or get someone to take over the notes. |

You are correct in assuming its just as bad as you not paying your own car payment. Your best bet would be to just pay the loan- it's already defaulted more than likely and to try and salvage your credit, I'd pay. Its unfortunate that it had to go that way, however in the long run, you'd be better off out a couple thousand than paying sky-high interest rates and never being able to get approved for anything. Another option would be to contact the company and inquire on removing yourself, as you've divorced, I doubt they will allow it, but it is possible. |

Everyone is right, it will appear on your credit as if you're not able to pay what you agree to pay. The bank may work with you by lowering the interest rate or extending the terms if you call and explain the situation, especially if they feel like you're going to not pay it at all. After you set up arrangments with the bank you should file a lawsuit against your xwife. Of course, if she's not working that won't do alot for you either. |

You better find a find a way to get it paid cause it will be a negative mark on credit report for sure. That's one bad thing about co-signing for someone, you have to maek sure they are paying on the debt, if they don't then they have to come after you for payment and they can repo it... |

Yep your right its just like not paying one of your own bills your credit report is going to be negatively affected. Go get the car whether or not its worth the value of the loan teach her you dont get to keep things you dont pay for. Sell the car for what you can I sold my van for $200 less than what I owed because it was worth not paying the payment for 2 more years. Take this as a lesson learned. |

I just bought a house and the owners had a judgment against the house for a co/sign car their son did not pay on. They had to settle up at the closing. That was years later after the repossession. |
