Woodrow S | I cosigned a loan for my friend to get a car and he let it get repoed.? |
Now that the car was repoed the loan co. wants me to pay for their loss...about 10 grand. I am barely affording to pay my own bills and just can't pay for this. I am 21 and was not fully aware of the consequences of this decision. I was just being a bud. By looking at the balance they want me to pay they must have given the car away since it is almost as much as what was borrowed. I did not know it would come to this. What are my options? My credit score is already garbage now due to this. Thanks for any help. |

Not much you can do. I'm sorry, but when you signed the auto loan contract, you agreed to be just as responsible for the loan as your "friend"... |

You are responsible for the the outstanding debt, you should have never co-signed for your friend. You are kinda screwed on the credit score for about 7 years. |

You really have limited options. Let this be a lesson learned. Yes co- signing for your friend was not the smartest decision to make, however it can be rectified. The purpose of a co-signer is to make sure that the loan is being paid for when it is due. Since the vehicle was reposessed, the car loan company will go after you as well.
I would talk to your friend and let him/her know that you are not happy with everything that is going on. I would seek legal advice as well and hopefully you can work out a payment plan with the car company.
Hope this helps! |

So sad that your friend did this to you. Too bad you had to go through this to learn your lesson, in result losing a friend, and messing up your credit report. I think you should take this so-called friend to court and I hope you have something written in stone that you two had a repayment agreement. I hope your friend does the right thing and repays this loan. |

unfortantely nothing. This is the risk you take when you cosign for anyone. If they defualt you are responsible. You can pay it that will help your credit some, but you will still have the repo on your credit file for up to seven years. |

Sorry, but your just as responsible for this as your friend is. Being that it it both names on the loan, the loan company will hold you and your friend responsible for this debt. The only option is to talk to the loan company and your friend and see if you can work out a payment plan. If neither of you pay, besides making your credit worse, this could result in legal action taken against you and your friend. |

Unfortunately, theres nothing you can do. You were of age to sign a contract that outlines the consequences of your co-responsibility for the debt. The lender has the right to auction the car off, then file a judgment for the whatever the balance is leftover, plus attorney fees, plus court costs, plus towing, interest and any other cost outlined in the "default" section of the contract. They may be able to seize assets, and in almost all states they can and usually do garnish wages. This will effect your credit for at least 7 years, perhaps preventing you from obtaining another car or even buying a home.
I don't mean to be harsh, not trying to be, but I work with folks everyday that are declined home loans because of this type of "helping a friend". It may be better to attempt to resolve it with them, maybe they will settle, I dont know. But I do know it will not go away. Just food for thought, good luck. |

Ask (or sue) your "friend" for the money. |

You have to pay. You are the primary on the loan and your "Bud's" credit report may not even reflect the debt. If not paid it will flush your already lack luster credit history down the toilet.
Unfortunately, if you can't get your "Bud" to pay up you will have learned a very costly valuable lesson....don't ever co-sign for ANYONE!!! |

Talk with the loan company or bank. They may settle for a lesser amount . They should have given you the opportunity to purchase the vehicle and continue the payments. Check with an attorney to see if any of your rights were violated and if you were notified properly as this situation developed. |

live and learn. talk to the bank and explain. otherwise, there is not much you can do. the bank can sue both of you so take care of this now before attorneys get involved. |
