it depends on what state you are in. if you live in Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington or WIsconsin, then you have something to worry about. Community Property states, like the ones listed, say that everything after you are married is 50/50, and that includes everything from the mortgage to the credit cards. Just keep in mind that NO collector can threaten to garnish or take any kind of legal action to get you to pay. IF you do not live in any of those states, they can't even speak to you about the account without written or verbal consent depending on the state. The only exception of the community property states is Texas, they require written permission. I would talk to your wife and figure out how its going to be paid. Read the link for your info on community property states. |

If it is in your SSN then you will pay or have to file identity theft charges against her. She committed FRAUD when appling for the credit if she used your SSN. That may be the ONLY way you can prove that the card was not yours and you were trying to conceal that fact by getting the po box etc to hide it from HER.
Did you benefit from the charges at all because sometimes that is also a criteria for who did what and you should have known you could not afford the things she was buying.
If the card is in her SSN and her name etc. then unless you are in a community property state it "ain't" your problem and next time the collector calls inform him he is not to call you again then send it in writing as a follow up. |

You would be if this is legitimate thing. But why were they calling? Bill collectors? You have seen no evidence of bills...talk to your wife to make sure someone is not trying to scam YOU. Or is this a pattern that you are ignoring? |

Don't accept the bill as your own.
I know everything should be shared in a relationship. However, she nixed that when she went behind your back, then got a PO box and credit card without your knowledge.
This could be the tip of the iceburg, talk with your wife and get to the bottom of this issue.
If she has a PO box, there may be more bills you don't know about. |

I wouldnt think that you would be liable for that bill.
I would be talking with wifey and find out what is going on, Sometimes it can be a gambling addiction or something much simplier, ask her what she spent the money on.. |

It probably doesn't affect your credit rating, until you go and buy a house or car together. Then her credit rating will make a big difference. Get some credit couselling and have a frank conversation about hiding information from each other. |

Even though married couples are considered a household income deal, it doesn't mean she can go out and charge hundreds of dollars and just not pay for it and expect YOU to be held accountable, that's horse poo poo!!!
We all are our own individuals and are liable for our OWN mistakes or "charges", with only the "moral and emotional support" to give to ones mistake(s), not liable!!!
She needs a swift spanky in the bum bum for this! Hope she learns! Hope she pays!

do not have any correspondonce with the company. You or your wife. After nine years it will cleared from your credit. But if you respond to a letter or promise to make pymt. then your only making matters worse. Just ignore all communication with them. It will go away. |
