I got a call from a collection agency, should I call them back?
They left a robo message with their phone number. I'm pretty sure it's about an old student loan, what should I do??

Call and settle it. Chances are if you tell them you cannot afford to pay the full thing they will work out a smaller settlement. Don't push that kind of stuff off, one day when you want to buy a house, that will be the reason you cant.

If you call them back, call from a pay phone. If you call from your home phone, their electronic system will validate your # and the phone will start ringing off the hook....

Unlike credit card debt....student loan obligations never expire due to statute of limitations laws....you might was well deal with it....

Pay the loan back

Taxes and student loans NEVER GO AWAY

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME CALLING BACK

IT SIMPLY VERIFIES YOU ARE AT THIS #

Well, i would advise you pay them. Now, if your not in the position to pay them immediatley, do not talk to them on the phone. This will just open the door to creditor harrasment, as they like to insult you to prompt you to pay.

Keep in mind student loans are not dischargable, meaning like child support you cannot file BK to discharge the debt. That being said, start putting money away to make small monthly payments on the debt. First get a copy of your credit report to see if the debt is reporting. If it is over 7 years old it cannot be on your report(even if you still owe).

If it is being reported dispute it to see if the creditor or collection agency has the right to collect in your state, or if there has been a lapse in their attention on the account, which would result in a deletion!

If that doesnt work or the debt is too recent, contact them in writing specifying your intent to pay, and schedule a payment plan that works for you. Make sure that the creditor accepts your payment plan and will not mark you as late by not meeting THEIR minimal payment.

Student loans never ever go away. The interest and penalties keep accumulating. The IRS will even get involved. Call and set up a payment schedule.

Whatever you do require that they provide proof or evidence that you owe the money. But do not (repeat do not!!!)give them any personal information like bank accounts or social security number.

There are a lot of shady collection agencies out there who prey upon and intimidate people into paying debts that were paid off years ago. Be careful. Ask for proof.

collection agencies work on their own will and are not in anyway able to actively harass you for the money. They can continue to ask for it, but as soon as they start coming round to your house or looking for you without a court order you can try to claim harrassment charges against them depending on the situation.
Don't pay them. I must owe about £4000 from about 6 years back and they chased me like a rabid dog for a while but i haven't heard anything in about 4.5 years they eventually have to give up chasing and call it a bad debt. companies have provisions for these anyway.
I work in accounts too, so i can always get out of these things.
