Counterfeit check scams are currently 'all the rage." Are you supposed to pay any portion of that check back to the company that issued it?
If you do deposit it, be absolutely sure the money transfers into your account before you spend it - if the bank clears it, it is not enough - banks 'clear' checks in anticipation of payment, you have to wait until the actual funds are in your accout to be absolutely safe. If the funds are not transferred you would have to pay back the bank if you took anything out against the check.
See the followiing advice from the Federal Trade Commission on Counterfeit Checks before doing anything:

Read the fine print. If you cash the check, they will be notified of the transaction, and you will be responsible for paying the money back and it's very possible you may be paying more than you bargained for. |

Were you expecting a $2000 check from someone? You said you called the place and they said it wasn't, who or what is the place?????? Be careful! |

READ the check. You may be agreeing to something by cashing the check. If not, go to your bank and speak to someone on the pedestal (someone at a desk). Show them the check and ask if you're being obligated to anything by cashing it. If not, deposit it into your account, and don't spend it until the check clears. (If you don't have an account, $2,000 is more than enough to open one.) |

hmm I'd be tempted to cash the cheque, possibly ask your bank for their opinion.
Or set up a new bank account, cash the cheque, if the money comes through, transfer it to your normal account, then close the new bank account. just so they don't get any details of where your money is kept.
and keep in mind, you never get something for nothing. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. look for fine print that may have come with the letter |

Yes, your instinct is most likely correct. Who sends someone $2000 without wanting something back? My friend cashed one of those checks at her bank, saved some, paid some bills, then 5 days later her account was overdrawn because the check was a fake. She couldn't pay the money back, they treated her like it was her bad check. They got a judgment on her credit now.
But in her case she sent them back some of the money, so they got her money but she had to pay back everything to the bank so she was money for both. Below is the website for Consumer protection bureau of the FTC. Maybe they can give more information. Be careful, hope this helps |

It's an unsecured loan at very high interest rates. Be careful that you don't jump from the frying pan into the fire. |

Ok we need more detail who is the check from? What did they ask you to do with it? Etc? Otherwise go to the bank and ask a personal banker to look at it (they may not know that is how good these scammers are). Then contact the FTC and they can usually run a check on the check. Next you said you contacted someone who is it? Contact the company/bank the check is drawn from and see if they actually have a check to you from whoever it is. Otherwise you will be held responsible for money spent deposited etc. if the check is bad. |

Money for nothing just doesn't exist. !!!!
I wouldn't be cashing the check. It's obviously a scam of some sort. You said that you spoke to them. What did they say it was for? Obviously they didn't successfully stop your concerns about the check or you wouldn't be asking us what to do. There answer couldn't have been completely legitimate sounding! Is the business recongisable. Have you had any interactions with them before recieving this check. Can you find any information about the complany on the internet. Did you apply for any credit? Did you do work for them? -
If not, then they are just after your personal details.
I have no idea how they get your details through a check, but there are some really clever people out there. Maybe they pay you this cheque before gaining your trust and scamming you with a second money making scheme.
I wouldn't bank that check if it was for a million dollars!!!! |
