Allaudin H | I got credit when i was 15 using my real social security number, do i have to pay off me bill? |
When i was 15 i used my real social security number to get credit because capital one was sending me advertisments in what not for there card with my name. So I wrote back to them with my information, and recieved a card with my name and a $200 limit, I blew the card up and forgot about it. I am 19 years old now, trying to figure do i have to pay that or is there something i can do about it. Additional Details Blew it up as in, maxed it out. |

What do you mean "blew the card up", you used the money on the card or destroyed the card? I think you must have destroyed it otherwise you would have gotten a statement for what you owe. So therefore if you didn't spend it, you owe nothing........they could wait till you become legal and get a judgment against you, if you spent the money............good luck!!! |

So, for $200, plus interest for four years, are you willing to have your credit trashed forever? You owe it, you pay it. Otherwise, for years to come, you'll have problems getting credit, you'll have to pay higher rates for credit, and you may not be able to get things you want, like a house or car loan. Technically, if they knew you were 15, you don't have to pay the debt, but then again, no one has to ever give you credit again either. Your choice. |

Somewhere on the credit card application, it said you had to be at least 18. So you lied to get the card. Legally you were underage and couldn't enter into a contract; however, that should have been brought up back then.
It would be good karma for you to pay it off. Bet that $200 limit is a whole lot more now with all the overlimit and late fees and interest. |

I would think you would have to pay it off, since it was under your social security number, BUT I do not think it was legal for them to issue a card to someone under 18 years old. Check with a lawyer. |

If you spent it then yes I would think you would have to pay them back seeing as this was a credit card and you used it. I find it odd that capital one would issue a credit card to someone under the age of 18 though. However if you did spend this $200 it would be best and less of a hassle if you just payed it off.
Have you receive any credit statements from them all this time? |

You can't sign a legal contract if you're under 18, so it's possible that you can't be held liable for the charges. But if you lied on the application and claimed to be 18 or older, they might be able to prosecute you for fraud, which could be a lot worse than just paying the charges. |

the dishonest way..you can dispute it. you were underage and can write a letter to the credit bureau/s that it is on letting them know that you should not be held responsible for this fraudulant claim. |

Say What?
|
You "blew the card up and forgot about it"? Do you mean you maxed it out and then forgot about it, or do you mean you just destroyed it and forgot about it?
If you didn't charge anything on it, you owe nothing.
If you maxed it out, you should have heard something from the card company or collection agency by now (4 years later). |

It will cost you more for a lawyer to fight it. Its only 200.00 pay it other wise it will affect you getting more credit. Lenders are not going to do the math to see that it was when you were 15 it is messing with your credit score. So pay it!! You owe it be honest. If more pepole paid there bills maybe it wouldn't be so hard to get credit these days. |
