It takes time to build a good credit score, but you can start by charging things here and there, just make sure you pay everything off on time every time and your score will increase. |

Open an account, such as a CD at your own bank. After it has been open for 6 months, apply for a loan DIRECTLY with an account rep/loan officer at the institution, explaining your need to improve your score. You will, of course, use this account as collateral. Borrow only about 75% of the amount you have on deposit. Also ask the loan officer to put an automatic rollover on the account until the loan is paid in full.
$1000.00 deposited, no more than $750.00 borrowed.
Also, ask them to tie your interest to your CD, in other words, ask for 2-3% over the interest drawn on the CD. You probably wont get that low a rate, but he/she will get the idea you know more about finance now than in the past.
Good Luck! |

How long ago did you pay off the debts? Slow pay/no pay stays on your record for 7 years. The importance of that bad information in your score goes down every year if there are no more bad incidents, but just paying them off will not immediately improve your score. You need to use credit responsibly, meaning use a credit card or get a loan and pay it off on time with no late payments. Not using credit will not help your score. |

Honestly, I was in a same situation you are now. I was a slow payer and finally paid all credit cards and auto loans off. Your slow payment or delinquencies stay in your credit reports for 7 years. What I did is that I destroyed all credit cards and reduced my borrowing power. More credit cards you carry reduces your score. There is a law firm called: LEXINGTON LAW I believe you may find it on a Internet. They will charge you about $40 a month and correspond to your creditors on your behalf and straighten your late payment records. Try it....
Good Luck |

One of the best ways to rebuild your credit rating and score is to get new credit. I relies that this is hard when you have had bad credit in the past. Try applying to Sears. They have one of the easiest cards to get, if not there get a secured credit card from your bank. If they don't offer it open up an account with a bank who does. Make sure that they report to the credit reporting agencies. The next step after that will be to purchase a car. It doesn't matter what kind of car. Get a used one. What you want with the car loan is at least $2400 financed and a term no shorter than 24 months. Almost all used car companies will loan to someone who has an active credit card. Make sure you pay all payments on-time. After that get another credit card.
All this will take time. What you wont at the end is 3 accounts that have been paid on-time for a minimum of 24 months and one account with a loan amount that started out with at least $2400. With these three items in place you could actually go out and get a home mortgage, provide you have the income needed to support the payment. |

Talk to your banker, they'll have the best options. Likely a small credit card would help. |
