I had just gotten approved for a Walmart credit. My level of credit is $400. I want a laptop for 536.90.HELP!?
Can i buy the laptop, then pay the balance with my debit card?

echo
They will probably let you do that, but don't use the full credit limit.

Before you try that - go to Walmart and grab the laptop and either go to the checkout or to customer service and tell them that you want to purchase it but your limit on your card will not cover the full cost. Then ask them to raise your credit limit.

Many times (but not always) that will work in getting a higher limit to cover what you are planning to purchase.

edited to add - Walmart may give you a special promo 0% (or a lower interest rate than the normal rate) for X month interest rate for a single high dollar purchase, ask them about that also.

Yes. I have done this. I give the store clerk cash and tell them to put the rest on the credit card. However, it is a good idea to pay off the balace as soon as you can to avoid interest and finance charges.

Walmart gave you the correct credit limit based on your credit history and current income. You never want to have more credit than you can afford.

Yes you can pay with the Walmart credit card and the balance with a debit card.

Here's a hint though....that Walmart card will probably have an interest rate of about 21%. Why don't you save for about 4 months and then buy the lap top? Using the Walmart card is going to cost a lot and you end up paying more like $1000 for the computer by the end of one year. Not really worth it when you can just wait a little longer and buy it with cash. You will never get ahead using credit.

Go buy the book Young Fabulous and Broke by Suze Orman. You will learn A TON!

Yes, you can do as you suggest. Charge the $400 to the credit card, and offer your debit card to handle the remaining $136.90. I am assuming that you have sufficient funds in the account to which your debit card is attached in order to handle that amount.

gpatrick900
You can. I would not use the full limit of the credit card. Otherwise, you could get into overdraft charges if you used the full amount.

You can put up to 400 on the credit card and the rest will have to be cash. If 400 is all the credit you can get I would say that you are really young or you have really bad credit. The best thing for you to do is to forgo the computer and get your credit in shape. The longer you wait the harder it gets and the worse it is for you. If you don't fix it now you will be asking about bankruptsy in a few years.

You already have a credit problem. You want more than you can afford. Do without.

You can make partial payments with anything. So by all means, put the $136.90 on your debit card. But before you do that remember that paying the minimum payments on the balance is very very bad. You'll end up paying twice as much for your laptop. ( the interest is very high) Wait 1 year and apply for a bank credit card. You'll maybe get a larger limit. But me importantly, much lower interest. Than you can get rid of the Walmart card. Much later on , you can use your good credit ( because you'll be paying you're card on time) to pay a house or/and a car. Don't keep it at max or near max. It ruins your credit rating. Enjoy your laptop love.

Why not buy yourself a walmart gift card place what you can on it and add to it until you can afford what you want. They are re loadable. You could charge the amount of what you could afford to pay off on the card when the bill comes in the mail.

The best thing for you to do is to cut up that credit card today and cancel that account. You have a choice today to live in freedom or bondage to the credit card. If you buy that laptop on credit you really don't own it till you pay the credit card off.

Take a few weeks and breathe. Save up the extra couple of hundred and buy that dude cash. Walk up there with pride and your 600 dollars and be weird and pay cash. Or even better shop for a better computer for less money.

I spent five years getting out of the hole that I begged Master card and Sears to dig for me. If you use that card and something happens that you can't pay then you are looking at dealing with collection calls. Hassling with idiots in a cubicle just because you had to have a laptop today.

Dont worry about your fico score. You'll never need it if you pay cash. If you've paid cash, have a good job, and a down payment you'll be able to get it. Be weird actually own your stuff. :)
