I had some credit card debt in college, does that stay on record for ever?
When I was in college about 10 years ago, I was irresponsible with some credit cards. Someone told me that the credit people wipe out your credit every seven years, it this accurate?

My advice, takes SPIFMANS answer, his is the only correct one so far.

BUT! the debt is still owed, it's just that they can not sue you in court, report it any longer on your credit report, about all they can do is beg.

What a bunch of bad answers.

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act derogatory accounts show for 7-years from the date of first delinquency which works out to 7-years and 180-days nothing but nothing resets this time line and it doe's not matter if the accounts are paid or not.

Greg
Depends if you filed bankruptcy or not. Then it depends on what chapter you filed. I believe Chapter 13 (where you paid a percentage of the debt back) lasts 7 years on your record and Chapter 7 (complete bankruptcy) lasts 10 years. But, and this is what people forget, when you fill out an application for some things like a job they ask you "Have you EVER filed bankruptcy". You have to say yes...and yes they can find out if they really want to do it.

Check out your credit report. You should do that at least once a year. This link is the way to get the report absolutely free. Freecreditreport.com is not free. They just have crazy commercials.

Yes. Mine was wiped off. The only thing you can't get wiped away is college loans.

Ann
Yes, I don't understand how we have to be in debt just because we want to get a college education. I am in college and am already in debt. This will probably be the first and last degree I obtain.

Yep. Gone after 7 years.

Seven years after the day you pay your debt. You do not get to not pay those and then get it wiped off your credit. My advice is to get your credit reports.

7 years after the last payment if you don't acknowledge the debt.

Its 7-10 years. Depends on who the Credit Company is. You can try for credit and see if you get approved, then you'll know who you owe.

crazy beautiful
if youve paid it off and have worked at building good credit since i think you should be fine.

you may view your credit report at equifax.com, creditreport.com, or consumerinfo.com and see for yourself. my reports go all the way back . so my guess is that your credit record is forever. the best you can do is to overcome prior bad behavior with future good behavior.

just me
Yep. I had to pay all mine off to buy a house. It will be with you forever!
That means no house, no new car, garnished wages, attorney fees.
And boy the interest will really get you.

who told you that another dummy? no it doesn't wipe out after 7 years

Red
Do they 'wipe' it? No. But MOST (again, I say, MOST) places that do credit checks only look for the past 5-7 years.

Yea, they should whip it as soon as you get them all paid off.
