jacob | I have $11,000 dollars in credit card debt spread over 4 different credit cards.? |
I have moved to Hong Kong where I will be for at least 5 years. My company pays for my apartment and I will never need a car so credit isn't important to me. I was planning on waiting for my end of the year bonus and paying them all off in one shot, but in the meantime I haven't made the payments in two months and I don't plan to make any payments until I pay them all off. My question is, can I wait until the end of the year until they start garnishing my wages because I don't want that to happen? And is debt consolidation a good idea? |

you should go into your bank and talk to a financial advisor. Try to see what options you have. Debt consolidation is a good idea if you can lock into a good interest rate that is lower than what you're paying on your credit cards, and won't skyrocket after a certain period. So, try and pay off the credit card with the highest interest rate first, or move it to another line of credit with a lower interest rate.
Importantly, try to pay off your debt first before doing anything else. Sacrifice going out, buying a new pair of shoes, etc. You want to bring it down to a manageable level so that you're paying down the principle and not just the interest. Once you get that done, you're golden. |

See if you can consolidate your debt at an attractive rate of interset. If not, transfer your balances to the card with the lowest interest rate and keep up the payments until you're done. |

You are hurting your credit the longer you wait. Why not pay the minimum if you are pretty confident that your bonus will pay off the balance? Debt consolidation depends on the terms of the consolidation loan.
If credit not important why not cut of the credit cards now. |

Youre most likely adding late payment fees of $25-40 per month to your tab. Plus outrageous monthly interest.
Credit might not be important to you, but it is to them. They will put a strike on your future credit, even if you do pay them off after several months of non payment. Youre ruining your credit for life right now....should you decide to ever buy anything on credit again.
Debt consolidation.. I would take a look at it .
Your present plan is not good. |

your credit rating is going to take a big hit between now and then - they would have to take you to court and win to garnish your wages, which will be tough if you're in Hong Kong |

Like mentioned you will rack up charges and interest fees galore! See if you can transfer your balances to a zero interest card so that you can make just a few small payments to get you to the end of the year. Or even a loan? Even try calling each credit card company and telling them your situation and see what they can do. I'm sure they would much rather get their money from you then sell the debt to a collection agency.
If you close your cards that will hurt your credit long term. (Impacting length of credit history) The "late-pays" from just not paying them for the rest of the year will remain on your score for 7 years |

Before deciding to go for credit card debt consolidation, first find out if it is right for you. Start by totaling all the balances on credit cards and store cards and the APR charged on these balances. Be sure to include any other fees and charges applicable to the balance and even those levied if the balance is nil.
This will let you get an overview of all your debts on one sheet, to let you compare them at a glance. This information will give you a picture of the cost of each debt in terms of interests and charges and will help you in comparing it against the consolidation loan quotes that you will have to get later on to continue the comparison process further.

Don't be stupid!! If you miss payments you are charged fees and your interest rate goes up. Your 11,000 could skyrocket by the end of the year. |
