I have $3000 in debt, I can't afford to pay it anymore. Will I ever be able to lease an apartment?
I have $3000 in credit card debt for about five or six cards. I know the average credit card debt per person in the U.S. is about $10,000. I never have any money because I work part-time and go to class. I think my part-time job is in jeopardy and I just want to send cease and desist letters to all the credit cards and just move on. I have student loans (which my dad has agreed to pay) and other debt that is going to be paid off which I can handle. I am just concerned if I give up on the cards at least until I am in a better financial situation that I will never be able to lease an apartment.

Please share your experiences. Has anyone gone delinquent on quite a few things but was still allowed to lease an apartment by paying a double security deposit, etc? Please share with me. Thanks

Having 6 credit cards in default on you would probably mean you'd need a cosigner for a lease, not a larger security deposit.

You'd be viewed as a risk, and they'd want a cosigner in case you decided to stop paying rent

Not every landlord does a credit check.
So all you have to do is to find the landlord that doesn't.

Otherwise... I don't even see how you can afford to rent a place as it is. $3000 isn't that much credit card debt and it would be very unlikely that you could get rid of them. They will simply turn the accounts over to a collection agency and/or get a judgement and garnish your wages.

You can't send cease and desist letter to your creditors. They aren't doing anything illegal by sending you bills for the money you borrowed.

Why don't you ask your father for a personal loan and pay off all the cards then cut them up immediately and start living off the money you make?

Talk to your bank and see if they can help you consolidate your credit card and they will work with you where you can pay them a monthly amount that you can afford. Remember that different cards have various interest rates. DO NOT GO DELINQUENT on your bills, this will definitely affect your credit score, which they check if you are leasing an apartment or buying a card, or getting a loan. You will have to manage to pay off this debt, from experience my bank worked with me to pay off my credit card and i made a monthly payment to them that i can afford. good luck.

Try to pay the minimum payment
It can take years to fix all that if you default

I don’t have the answer to all of your questions. However, there are some things that you CAN do to repair your credit. In fact, sometimes you can indeed get negative items removed; depending on the situation. This might be a good place to start. I recommend trying the free course at http://www.redfoxcredit.com/repair.php

They provide a lot of great information for improving your credit score, and it worked well for me.

It would really depend on how you handled both situations. In my case, I just quit paying my monthly CC payments until my financial situation improved (about 4 months). I have never had a problem getting an apartment, but still wouldn't recommend going delinquent. The main thing you need to watch is your credit rating as this can affect your interest rates on other loans in the future (check your credit scores online annually- it will show all delinquencies). One thing you might consider is getting a larger student loan than needed next semester to cover the total cost of your debt or at least getting it to a manageable amount. The interest rate on a student loan is much lower than a CC and if you have deferred payments, you can deal with it after you graduate and get a good job. Another thing...cut up the credit cards!

Well with your current financial situation, your credit score is low now.. But you're working part-time and that's a problem. When you leasing an apartment, there's a rule called "3 times the rent amount"
Your monthly income has to be more than "3 times the rent amount".
Example, if the rent is $500 a month, your monthly income has to be more than $1500. Also, they check your credit and rental history.
Try finding a friend with a better financial situation to be your roommate. But if you're applying for the apt. yourself, you will not be approved at all. To me, it's best to wait for your financial situation to get better before you get an apt.

Listen very carefully ok?

If you EVER want to put a STOP to being debt and living in an uncertain way...paycheck to paycheck.....than read the following books:

1) Automatic millionaire-David Bach

2) Secrets of the millionaire mind-T.Harv Eker

Seriously READ those books....

and remember to "pay yourself FIRST"
