You can find a complete list of credit cards to help build or improve your credit here:
http://www.asapcreditcard.com/unsecured-offers.html
While these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards-- they'll allow you to prove your credit worthiness and improve your credit score. Eventually, with regular on-time payments you should be able to apply for better offers with lower APR's and less fees. For now, these are the types of offers you'll be limited to...
Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK! |

Check with some of the credit card companies like capital one and HSBC. You might have better luck there. Also, you probably won't get a very high limit-- I was in the same situation, and the limit on my first credit carrd was only $300. That said, I was a broke college student at the time, and it helped keep me from running up a ridiculous balance...
Also, don't expect good rates & such... but as time goes on, the limits will raise & the rates might improve. Also, once you have had 1 card for a while, you can apply for a "better" one and cancel the old one. I did this, and now, my main card also earns me frequent flier miles.... |

Try to get a line of credit from a merchandiser....like Sears or target or even Montgomery Wards. Sears is the first company that I got a credit card from years ago. Here is what you must remeber though. The easier it is to get the line of credit, the higher the interest rate will be on that credit. I believe the APR on a Sears card is like 23%. (I haven't used that card in years because of that fact.)
The best thing to do when trying to establish a credit rating is once you get the card, use it periodically, but pay it off when the bill comes due. Never be late with a payment. Pay more than the minimum balance due. That will tell other creditors that you can use credit properly.
It is hard to make major transactions without a credit score, you are doing the right thing trying to get credit. Just be careful. It is easy to rack up thousands of dollars of debt in a short time. Once it gets up there, it takes a LONG time to pay off. Trust me, I speak from experience.
Once you do get credit, it will be easier to obtain more credit. You will get credit card offers in the mail every other day. You will get sick and tired of the word "you are preapproved for".... |

You could always get a secured credit card... this is a great way to establish credit. I would google "secured credit card" and you location to find out what banks in your area offer it.
You could also try for a retail card to establish some credit as well.... |

There's a couple of things that you can do.
1. If you have a close friend or family member with excellent credit, have them add you as an authroized user on their oldest credit card in good standing. Once you're added, the activity from that account will reflect on your credit.
2. Although you may have applied for an unsecured card, see if your bank offers a secured card. A deposit would have to be put upfront as collateral for the same amount in a line of credit, but that's the easiest way to go. As long as you manage the account by not maxing it out and making more than the minimium payment on time every month, usually after a year the card converts to a regular card and you'll receive your deposit back with a little bit of interest.
3. Try Orchard Bank. They seem to have a credit card to fit everybody, including secured ones. I provided links to several secured cards, including orchard bank |

One good way is to start with a gas card issued by a franchise gas station (Mobil, BP, Sunoco). Maintain this with a good record for 6 - 12 months. Then you can re-apply for regular Visa/MC cards more easily. The limits won't be high at first, but after showing a good track record they'll increase your limits. When you get to a point where the credit limits meet your needs and they want to increase them, ask for them to lower your interest rates instead. But that's down the road. |

Why do you need a credit card? You will probably be better off without one.
Why don't you buy one? Visa and Master Card both have a prepaid card that cost about $5 per month. You put money on the card and then uses it like credit. The down side is that you have to pay up front-the good part is that you pay no interest or payments-that great. Thats the best way to go. This way you can not get into debt and destroy any hope of having something some day. You do not need credit-its a scam! |
