ateapartyscandal | I have a 1 year old debt, does credit get worse the longer I don't pay? |
I'm currently 20 and about a year ago had to visit the hospital due to an ear problem. The bill is approx 2,500 and I have yet to pay it. I have no other form of credit history that I am aware of, and this is my only debt. I'm really starting to worry about it. I'm not really aware of how credit actually works, so I'm just wondering if I should really be as stressed as I am. Will it get worse the longer I don't pay for it? Can I still pay through the hospital rather than the debt collector (I've heard some terrible stories about this particular company)? |

Right now, at a year, it's hurting your credit the most, that's if it's even reporting on your credit. Sometimes, it can take a year just for it to even go to collections. One thing you should know about credit is that anything that you've done or currently doing within the past 24 months is affecting your credit the most.
The first thing you should find out is whether or not it's even reporting on your credit and which agencies are reporting it. I've seen where medical collections will only show on one or two agencies, but not all 3.
In the meanwhile, I would plan out a way to make payments or even save up enough to where you could negotiate. You could also negotiate a "pay to delete" which is a payment in exchange for removing it from the report if it did get reported.
There's a slight possiblity that you could contact the accounts receivable at the hospital to see if you can negotiate payments, but chances are they're going to want payment in full.
In closing, I wouldn't stress yourself into a frenzy, if you can't pay it, you can't pay it, but make a plan to get it done when you can |

If a collection agency has it, then the hospital has already charged it off and sold the debt. You have to settle with the collection agency. Your credit record is probably already adversely affected. |

Contact the collection agency by letter (not phone, or email or fax -- you want a paper trail) and work out a settlement plan.
Try to get a delete for payment. If you can come up with a lump sum, you can probably settle for less than the full amount -- maybe $2K. Any payment plan will have to be short term -- within 6 months, definitely not more than a year.
Be sure to get any settlement arrangement in writing and don't give them access to your bank account. Absolutely DO NOT just send small payments without an agreement from the collector. There is not such thing as "good faith payments" and the collector does NOT have to accept those small payments. |

it won't get any worse that it already is,
Here's what you do, call the hospital not the debt collection company, make arrangements to pay.
Tell them this. I can pay you guys but i want and NEED a discount, offer them like 1600 dollars and tell them that you can pay them in like 200 bucks a month for like the next eight months, they just might go for it,
Get it in writing what the agreement is. then follow through with it.
It's too little of an amount to declare bancruptcy on. by far. |

Don't you just love how you come here and get people preaching to you rather than answering your question? Well let me give you the correct answer.
The longer an item is on your credit report, the less effect it has, so it will actually get better as time goes on.
DEFINETLY try to pay the hospital if they will work with you. Call up their billing department and ask if they'd be willing to get the collection agency off your case in exchange for payment.
If that won't work, I'd deal with the collection agency bu ONLY if they agree IN WRITING to delete the listing from your credit report. This is called a pay for delete agreement.
I'm going to post some links below. You can start reading over them and you will start to understand more and more about how credit works. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need any help.

Yes, the amount can have interest added on, and every month the amount you owe gets bigger. Why the heck haven't you made efforts to pay this? Do you think hospitals should work for free? Do YOU work for free? no? Then do the responsible thing, call them up and arrange to start making payments.
In the meantime, you are simply jacking up prices for the rest of us who DO pay our bills at the hospital- prices are so damn high because of folks like YOu who don't pay and leave it for the rest of us to make up.
I have no doubt you weren't considering that, but it;'s true, wether you intedned it or not. |

You may want to contact the hospital, many of them offer financial aid and will pay the bill for you. |

I would start paying it off a little at a time. The longer you wait, the worse it could end up being. Do you have to pay interest for it? if you do over time the interest could accumelate and become harder for you to pay in the long run. |

of course it gets worse, if you do intend to pay the bill call to make a payment plan , or start sending alittle bit every month, this should help that you are showing an effort. |
