I suggest that when you go to them ask if your delinquent account was reported to a credit reporting agency(most likely it has been). If it was, it might have already damaged your credit history. There is a way to remove it, but you have do it by contacting all the credit agencies and requesting a removal in writing(you have to request your report first). Even this doesn't guarantee anything. Also, try to get something in writing(other than just a receipt) from the hospital that your account has been paid. Make sure there is a contact person with a phone number. You might need it later with the collection agency. And, there is a chance it's too late. If it is, sometimes the collection agency will negotiate a settlement of your debt. For instance, if you owe say 2500 they might settle your account for 2000. |

Yep, just make sure to reference your hospital account number and not the agency account number. |

First you need to find out who owns the account currently. Is it the hospital or the collection agency? In some cases, the hospital will take the payment because, although they have retained the services of the collection agency, the hospital still owns the account. In other cases, the hospital has completely sold their interest in the account, and the only party legally able to collect on the debt is the agency.
You can ask the hospital if they still own the account when you call. If the agency is the legal owner of the account and you pay the hospital, you've paid the wrong party and the collection agency can still collect against you. |

NO. The hospital SOLD your debt to the collector for some fee. The hospital will not have the record, and it will not be cleared if you send the check to the hospital. |

Contact the company that the bill comes from directly and talk to their accounts receivable department or collections department. If you are respectable and cooperative, they are typically very understanding and willing to work with you. I've done this for several medical bills and even had them reduced somewhat. |

Yes. If you pay the hospital directly, it will clear your debt. They may moan and whine about it, because they have to forward all or a portion of it to the collection goons, but you will pay off the debt. |

You have to call the original creditor and make sure they are willing to still take the payment. Because when they gave your acct to the collection agency, they allow the agency to collect interest on your acct.
Call them up first to make sure you pay your debt in full.
But, the good thing about collection agencies is that they might be willing to allow you to say 70% of your debt to satify the acct. |

I worked in a dental office for several years and spoke with a couple different lawyers inquiring about the same thing you are asking. I had sent a patient to collection and 2 months later she sent the payment directly to the office. When I inquired, I was told that by law (in Illinois at least) that yes I had to accept the payment. I then had to turn around, call the collection agency to inform them that the bill had been satisfied and then they sent the office a bill for their services. It works the same way if you just make payments also.
Yes, the hospital will probably complain and most likely tell you it cannot be done that way because it sucks for the paper work on the offices end, but it can be done. My advise to you would be to check what your state laws are regarding this matter. If your state law states that payment can still be made directly to the hospital, and they argue with you, at least you will have a come back for them regarding the law.
Good luck |
