I have a friend that is wanting to get a personal loan for $2500-$3000. She does have bad/poor credit.?
Is it possible for her to even get a personal loan for that amount and if so where/what is the best recommendation for her to apply that's legit? Where could she try and how fast would she know a decision? Thanks.

Depends on how "poor"

Under 500-- no

500-550--Very unlikely. A few rare ones may give you chance at extremely high rates.

550-600-- Possibly, but it can be hard. And rates will be high.

600-650.. Many banks will begin to give loans out when you get into this credit range.

Her best chance is at a local bank where she has a checking/savings account. Sit down with a loan officer and discuss options.

Even though your credit may be bad, there is one website we found and maybe the only source to get a unsecured personal loan with a credit score as low as 520. A credit community website called prosper.com, which is a marketplace for credit that enables people to lend money to other people in a safe, efficient manner.

If your friend has poor credit, then she will probably be unable to obtain an unsecured loan for any amount. Banks and other lending institutions usually require some form of collateral even for good credit customers.

Your friend needs to work on repairing her credit before trying to get any new credit. Each inquiry on your credit report (when a company checks your credit) lowers your score. The best way to repair credit is to make timely payments each month. Time is really the only way to effectively boost your credit score.

Another thing that pulls down credit scores is unsecured debt. Mortgages and other secured notes aren't as damaging, since they have collateral against them. Revolving debts such as credit cards and store charge cards are extremely damaging if they have balances more than 80% of the limit. Tell your friend to pay these off first, for 2 reasons - they aren't good to have and the interest rates on these types of debts are usually high.

Remember - derogatory information can remain on a credit report for 7 years and bankruptcies for 10 years. They are the worst within 2 years of their occurence, but they continue to have an impact until they expire.

As someone else suggested, start with a bank that she may have a relationship with. The bank may not be able to give her a loan but may be able to suggest other sources such as AIG, Beneficial. I received a loan from Wells Fargo Financial and it the loan about 6 hours after I applied. Just be so careful of the loan scammers out there. She shouldn't give any personal information to any lender until she can verify business name, address, phone number. And if any lender ask for upfront money before she receives a loan, it is a scam. It is illegal in the United States and Canada for a lender to do this.
