I have a good credit score, why can I not get a mobile contract?
I have just checked my credit score through experian and it is 857 out of 1000. Yet I cannot get a mobile contract through any network service provider. Why could this be? I am not on the electoral role, could this be why?

Does anybody know what sort of credit score is acceptable to get a contract?

The only debt I have is a £500 overdraft which gets paid in full EVERY month.

I have tried all the major networks and they have all said no. It's so annoying as we have a household income of 36000 a year and no financial commitments as we live in forces accomodation. I am married (4 years) with 2 kids and I am 21. My credit history goes back 3+ years.

it is because of electoral role

Brendan E
It is almost certainly entirely down to you not being on the electoral roll.

Ask your council for a registration form and get registered.

Then let the likes of experian know so that they can update their online records.

857/1000 is a very good score and would suggest you have a good payment record on any current / previous credit facilities. But the obvious question would be; why did they give you credit without you being on the roll.

A possible answer is that telephone companies are far more likely to have electoral roll registration as a pre-requisite for law enforcement reasons. Police routinely check phone records when investigating a crime and will routinely contact mobile phone providers for the address of anyone who has been in contact with someone suspected of being involved in a crime.

Another possible reason is that you only have one credit facility - a £500 overdraft. Believe it or not your credit rating with most financial providers would be far higher if you had 5 or 6 credit cards all with a good (12 month plus) payment history. I know that sounds perverse but it is nonetheless true.

Please also be aware that each time someone does a search your credit score comes down. So when you approach anyone for credit (mobile phone services or otherwise) make them absolutely aware that they are not to do a search until they have agreed in principal to provide the credit / contract you are asking for.

Those who routinely use price comparison sites should take note. Each such search is likely to result in 2 or 3 searches of your credit history and there's not a thing you can do about it - even if the price comparison search was for information purposes only.

Hope that helps

You might not have enough of a credit background.

It all depends on where you live, your age, income. Have you asked them why they rejected you?

They can't make as much money on someone who is reliable and pays up on time!
They prefer the ones who get charges left, right and centre!
