I have a low credit score. What can I do to raise it?
I've heard you should get 3 credit cards and make all payments on time. Is this right?

Also, what if I get 3 credit cards, and just never use them? Do I have to have current balances?

If you have a low credit score you need to pay any bills you have on your credit report and if its low because you have no past credit then yes get a credit card or two and use them and pay the balance every month.

I only use one card, but yes, you need a balance and interest in order for them to have anything to report.

Okay, first off the rule of thumb is to not have MORE than 3 credit cards, it does not mean you have to HAVE 3 credit cards. And never, ever, ever go out and open 3 credit cards (or multiple loans) period in a short period of time. THAT will hurt your credit.

If you have or get a credit card you need to use it to keep it active. If you get a card and just let it sit, you're not establishing payment history. Use the card to buy gas, and pay it off each month. If the account sits unused for 6 months it will start to report on credit as inactive and that will hurt your credit.

Keep credit card balances at or below 30% of their credit limits (example: $1,000 credit line = $300 max balance).

Pay ALL of your bills ON TIME - NO late payments

Pay off all collections, tax liens, judgements, etc.

Limit inquires to 4 per year

Lastly, give it time. Your credit score will not go up overnight, be patience and it'll get their eventually.

if you never use them, then your credit score won't go up, it's paying a bill that helps raise credit score.

you don't need to carry a balance, because every day your credit score changes, so if you charge $10, that balance will show on every day's credit report until you pay if off.

You need to use them a little each month and then pay it off. 3 credit cards help alot if used and paid off.

5 not to miss things for a good credit score

1. Use the credit card only when absolutely essential. Pay your regular expenses by cash or a debit card. This will help you budget and not go overboard with credit card debt.

2. Follow repayment schedules like religion. Don't miss out and invite late payment fees, increased APR rates and blocked reward programs.

3. Don't stick to the monthly minimum payment. Pay the maximum you can afford and get that outstanding debt cleared as fast as possible. By just paying the monthly minimum the credit card companies reap the maximum rewards while, as a consumer you pay the maximum interest.

4. Get rid of multiple credit cards. Although this might sound difficult, but if you are struggling to repay on time and, juggling with the repayment dates is causing you to default- it's time to think. If there is a genuine need to keep multiple credit cards, then try to automate their monthly payments. This will ensure that you don't default unwillingly and face the negative consequences. The process of credit repair is much more than simply eliminating the negative information. You should ensure any positive information that can improve your credit score is actually included.
1. Report Your Positive Accounts:
2. Use Other Person’s History:
3. Go For Plastic Cards
4. Use a Secured Card:

Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1Step OneCheck your credit report! Determine how much improvement you need to make your score attractive to prospective lenders.
2Step TwoIf you have overdue accounts, get them paid and keep them current. The longer you keep all your debt current, the better it will look on your credit history. This will lead to a better FICO score.
3Step ThreeSettle any accounts that have gone to collections. This will help your score in the future, if not immediately.
4Step FourKeep balances on any kind of credit card or “revolving credit” low. When you have high balances, they can be a huge detriment to your FICO score.
5Step FivePay off debt instead of moving it from one place to another. Paying off the debt, or lowering the amount owed, will increase your score.
6Step SixOpen new credit accounts responsibly and pay them off each month. Showing a good payment history over time will raise your FICO score.
7Step SevenKeep open accounts you already have. Closing current accounts will not help your FICO score, but keeping them paid on time will.
8Step EightCheck your credit report at least once a year, to determine how well you are doing at improving your FICO score and to make sure it is not actually getting lower.
9Step NineCreate a budget, including a payment schedule of all your debt, and stick to it.
Tips & Warnings
Married couples should always look at both individual’s credit scores.
Settling an overdue account that has gone to collection will not remove it from your score. Know that it will remain for seven years, so you are prepared to answer questions about it.
Moving debt from one card to another and closing the one card account can actually hurt your FICO Score.
Making a monthly budget and sticking to it is the best way to improve your overall financial situation, which will lead to a higher FICO score.
Beware of companies stating you can get a “Free Credit Report”. Normally you will get a credit report, but you will also be required to buy a service for an entire year! You can purchase your credit reports yourself for less from all 3 agencies.
Watch those “Raise your FICO score FAST” schemes. For some, they may work, but more often they backfire and actually lower your score!

It a lie you have to run balances but you do need to use them the best way to do it is one dedicated for gas and make sure you pay it off every month the second for general purchases the 3rd for grocery's
the one key thing is never charge what you cant pay in cash
and once you charge it put the cash aside so you put 30 on the gas card put 30 in an envelope same with all the other cards so you can pay them off every month
also make sure you pay all your other bills on time as credit is built by not being late

best cards I have

Discover gas card hard to get but pays back 5% on gas

None use does not built credit as fast as using them and paying on time. Pay them off in a few months and call them tell them to offer more credit. Slowly your credit rating will go up. Call your 3 rating company's and ask if there is something under your name stopping you from getting the right rating.
