Another batch of poor answers.
Folks, the least of his concerns is getting this off his credit report!
What state do you live in?
For starters, you CAN NOT igore this. The lawyer is requesting a "judgement debtor disclosure" meaning you must supply information about your employment and assetts. If you ignore this request you can be held in contempt of court, and you will be in even greater trouble.
You are correct, there is a "statute of limitations". I've supplied a good link below to find out. It has info on all of the state SOL's. But note that in most states, if the creditor files for an extension prior to the judgement expiring, it can be renewed. For example, here in Michigan the SOL is 10 years, but it can be renewed every 10 years as many times as they want. Some states limit the number of extensions. You need to go to the courthouse and request to look at the file. See if the extension was file, and if it was done on time. That may be your only hope out of this.
What you really need to worry about is the interest. Judgements collect interest from the date of filing, so you could have a very hefty balance right now. |

if you can't afford a lawyer go to FTC.gov and look for more info on this. Aside from a lawyer, your best bet for accurate information and there are also sample letters on the ftc website |

just because it can't be reported on your credit after 7 years doesn't mean you are relieved of paying the debt.there is no statue of limitations, the only way you can stop them is to file bankrupty and include this debt. |

NUMBER ONE...Get a Lawyer ASAP. This could be a zombie debt collector trying to go after you who bought the debt for pennies on the dollar and is now trying to collect.
Do not acknowledge them...ignore them and get a Lawyer at once. It is worth it. If you pay them even once cent you could reactivate the judgement.
So GET A LAWYER...or continue to be harrassed for nothing. |

It can't stay on your credit for more than 7yrs. Get some free legal advice and ask. Go to your credit report and Dispute this, and if they don't get back to you within 30 days, they have to remove it from your credit. |

Here is what you want to do: Write a cease and desist letter. This letter basically tells the debt collector that they can not contact you no matter what. Also, you want to get a copy of your credit report from all 3 credit reporting companies to see when the last time the debt was reported on the credit history. If it hasn't been updated since 1996. Then it should be removed from the credit history. Judgements can last up to ten years. The key word is "up to". If it has been updated recently than basically the debt will remain on the credit history for another 10 years. If this attorney (debt collector) tries to freeze your bank accounts then it will be time to get an attorney. Try the above avenues first. You really don't want to resort to an attorney unless it is your last resort. |
