I would keep it only if it was not costing for non usage, remember it is ,after all, just another hole to jump into, but it could be handy in an emergency. |

your credit history is determined by how much credit you have outstanding and your repayments.
if you have a high outstanding credit balance and you make late repayments or miss a repayment on the outstanding credit then your credit score will be reduced.
best thing to do is use the card once a month and make the repayment of the requested amount or the full balance on time, you don't have to spend a lot. use it for a quick food shop or for filling up the car.
all they are interested in is outstanding credit and if you make the repayment on time and for the right amount asked for. |

Buy one item a year with it, and pay the bill promptly. |

You should keep it, and get it into credit if you can ;-)
OR, you can give it to me ;-) |

If it is not costing you anything and you are strong willed enough not to use it .I would say keep it. |

Keep it ... even if you buy one small value item a month and pay it off completely each month. |

provided you dont overspend on it!
then I'd keep it! |

depends. if you leave it 'open', according to the credit bureau, your overall credit standing reflects this as a possible source of you using it. even if you don't touch it ever, it still stands as a possible. so if you are looking to improve your standing, you don't intend to use it, you might want to close it, notify the credit bureaus. monitor the recordings of such and make sure the closure is accurately stated. don't see it? inquire quickly. the less opened accts, the better your repayment on what's owed? the better your credit standing. the reverse is also true! whatever you decide, choose carefully! |

if you want to increase your credit score then close it as lenders wouldnt want you to have access to a large sum of money.
when you close it your credit score will go up. |

you should hang on to it & use it & re pay it regularly. This is what helps to build up your credit rating |

Your credit history will benefit from you keeping it as the more cards you have the better chance you have of getting credit |

Credit cards can be invaluable sometimes. Its good to have that extra security, that piece of mind, knowing that in the unlikely event that something happens, you've got a piece of plastic to safe you or atleast pay for it.
When lenders assess your application for credit, what they mainly see is whether you've been able to pay back what you've owed.
Also its not like you have ten credit cards lying around (high number of credit arrangements) which may be seen as 'over-subscribed'.
Also when an account is settled, (account is closed) it remains in your credit file for six years. Stating previous payment history etc.
What I would suggest is to keep that card as your safety buffer but don't think of it as 'shopping-galore pass!'
Once in a while it wouldn't hurt if you used your card to pay for shopping like a £15 trip to Tesco once in a while just so that there is activity on the account. |
