I have been receiving message from my answer machine, that is a pre-recorded message claim they are a debt?

The collector probably did a skip trace for someone with a similar name or maybe just got the phone number wrong. You could try to call them back and tell them they have the wrong number but chances are that won't really stop them.

Eventually they will sell the debt off to some other collector and the phone calls will start anew.

pinky
Do not call them back, do not answer them. Collectors are scumbags and only care that they get someone to answer them. They have threatened to call me until one of us dies. I have a very common name and owe nothing.
They will ask for your SSN and anything else they can get.
Call your phone service provider and ask for help. SSB gave me a phone # for a federal dept that I could report these ppl too.
Be very careful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call them on the number. I am a collector, they won't ask you for anything personal. Tell them that "so & so" doesn't live at that number anymore and you want them to stop calling you. By law they have to, if they don't report them to the Attorney General in the state you are in.

donfletcheryh
You may be a victim of identity theft. The collection agency may be legitimately attempting to collect the debt racked up in your name.
If this is so, you need ot find out about it and get thy dee wheels of correction in motion, because if you do not explicitly deny a debt it can become yours.

It could be a scam. be careful of what info you provide.

this happened to me for about 1 year i called them back and told them I was not the person they were looking for but the calls continued and I ignored them eventually they stopped.Make sure if you call you DO NOT give them any personal info except the # they are calling is not listed under the person they are looking for.

Terence L
I think its a scam. If you've never heard of ther person, don't answer them. If you owe money, you'll get letters in the mail before they start calling you trying to collect money.

Flower Girl
You could have a debt that you didn't pay that was sold to a collection agency. If that is the case you need to contact them asap. However to get the calls to stop you will have to call them either way.

Don't contact them. There is absolutely no upside for you with these characters only a downside. You could be right that it's a scam or they have an erroneous telephone number (they want to collect a debt and they won't take your word that they're wrong.)
Are you on the do not call list?

John R
I don't think they are following federal outlined collection proceedures. If you don't own money to anybody or at lease not late. Don't worry about it. When they contact you just tell them that you are not that person, ask for their i.d. (they have to give it to you), and request that they don't call you any more.

Jesse Rocks
So have I!!! Weird! Does it say, "by continuing to listen you are acknowledging you are __________"........can't even understand the name...but it's not me.

MindJog
If the message doesn't concern you (i.e. you don't recognize the person specified in the message) you have no obligation to respond to the message and it is safe to forget it.

harleygirl
CALL THEM AND TELL THEM THEY HAVE THE WRONG #

DON'T GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFO,IF THEY ASK...THEY SHOULD HAVE ALL THAT INFO...IF THEY SAY WHO THEY ARE.

Rich Z
There are a lot of companies that claim to have debts you owe. Some of them buy old records from banks that have written them off so they are no longer owed. They are frauds. You should ignore them.
