Beware of the cards offered through the mail. Once you turn 18, the credit applications start pouring in, and most of them have interest rates so high, you end up paying for your purchases twice. Store cards also have exorbant rates, so it's better to be choosy, and do your research. Try checking with your bank to see what they offer. If you're looking to build some credit the safe way, go to your bank and ask if they offer a secured card (ex: you save $500 and the bank puts it into an account that you don't touch. In exchange, they give you a credit card with a $500 limit. That way, you can only spend as much as you can pay, and there's no chance of default. Once you've built up your credit a bit, and you know how to use the card responsibly, you can look for a card with low rates and a higher limit.

if you are in Canada, there is a new database of Canadian credit cards at
http://www.canrates.ca

The database lists secured cards as well - they are great for establishing credit history.

You can search for the credit card that suits you best and compare several credit cards side by side.

You can find a complete list of credit cards to help build your credit history here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/unsecured-offers.html

Although these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards, they'll give you the opportunity to prove your credit worthiness and improve your credit score. Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to apply for better offers with lower APR's and less fees. But for now... this is what you're limited to...

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

If you're a student get a Citi MTV U card---thats what I have now and I have an 8 grand limit--but I already have credit....
When I first started I got a Chase Mastercard with a $1500 limit.
Pretty low interest too.
be careful with them....

You apply for a secured credit card first. Then makes sure you keep this card with a good standing. After a few months of so, you probably be able to get approved for a credit card for a few thousand dollars.

Citi® Bronze®/AAdvantage® MasterCard®is by far the most widely used card. It is essential for regular travelers with average credit. Its reward program gives you an additional mile per $2 spent on the card. You can collect up to 25,000 miles annually, and can be redeemed for flights on partner airlines, hotel accommodations throughout the world, and car rentals. Additional benefits are: zero liability for unauthorized transactions, travel accident insurance and various Internet account associated services. The card does not charge any annual fee. But the drawback is the minimum APR cap for cash advances, set at 19.99%.
