department stores (Sears, MAcy's, JC Penney) are easier to get than a major credit card (MC or VISA). They can help you establish credit so that you can apply for a major credit card in 6 months. Of course, if you "need" a major credit card, this won't help you. Keep in mind:
1. credit cards are too easy to get, which is why as a nation we are in a debt crisis-you can probably get a major card with no credit-just not with bad credit.
2. it is VERY EASY to rack up obscene debt without realizing it-be very very careful on how you use those things. Especially with today's prices, you'll ahve a $5,000 balance in no time, and with minimum payments you'll be paying it off for 10 years-assuming you never use it again... |

Well, you may want to think seriously about why you need a card. In my experience, people who need a card are just getting themselves in a lot more trouble. Believe me, debt sucks.
If you mean you need it because you want to build your credit over the next few years, I would start by getting a cell phone account in your name. Pay it on time and if it is doing well after six months or so, then I would apply for a card at your local bank branch.
Just be careful, make sure you have a secure steady income and don't charge more than 1/4 of your limit up. Otherwise, you will end up paying a ton in interest charges. |

Go to a credit union and apply for membership there. You may be able to get a secured credit card - you deposit a sum of money as a guarantee - and after you have proven to them that you are truystworthy, they will issue a regular card with a credit limit. the limit may be low at first but over time you can build it up.
Do not fall into the trap of having to have everything all at once. Most people need time to accumulate all the "stuff" we have. Most of it is not worth going into to debt for. Try to pay the card off every month and you will have credit. |
