It might be a good idea to go to a mall and apply for an in-store credit card, like Sears or Kohls. After you have one credit acceptance, it is much easier to get a VISA or AMEX. However, don't send in more than one or two applications at one time, each application creates a credit check in the overall system (I don't know specifically who runs the system, but I do fear them!) and it could work against you.
When you do have a credit card, use it for something and pay it off IMMEDIATELY. This will make a good mark in your credit history.
Remember, credit can be a very useful and even life-saving tool (its midnight in a hurricane and you need a tow truck or some other service right away, believe me, plastic really helps!), but like any tool if you leave it on too long it might burn down the house (if you buy more than you can afford, you will end up paying more in interest than you did for the actual items).
Good luck. |

Start with a gas card; they are the easiest to get. Then use it every time you fill up and pay the balance immediately. It's the fastest way I know of to get a start on a credit history. |

If you have a bank account, go to the bank where the account is and request a card. They will start you with a low limit, but that will open the door for you.
If you do not have an account (say for instance that you cash your paycheck each week and work out of your pocket), open a checking account today and begin depositing your paycheck into it. Do not overdraw the account. Look for a bank that offers a low cost account with limited benefits. All you really need is a place to make deposits and process the few checks you might write each month. Go back in a month and complete a credit card application. |

Start applying at different places. Capitol One, Chase, MBNA, etc. No credit history and you are 41? Thats crazy! You never had a car financed? You must be either very frugal or rich. |

You're also a poor liar. At Fourty-One EVERYONE has some kind of credit history...either that or you've recently entered "The Program.:"
Try getting a bank account first, then get some utilities in your name. Pay all bills on time and keep your bank account balance above the minimum. Get yourself a secured bank card/credit card and make one purchase in a year. Pay for it immediately upon receipt of your statement and then discontinue the card. |

Just because you dont have a credit card and never had one doesn't mean you dont have a history in credit, Everything you pay on time gives you credit, your car, your home your bills and everything else.

I have read all the answers, but don't particularly agree with any of them. IF you have a bank account, you have a debit card, and that card is also a VISA or MC. IF you have not overdrawn your checking, you can now ask the Bank for a regular VISA or MC card. It is all but automatic, it may have a low limit, but you will have a card. DO NOT pay off balance once a month, just some kind of payment that establishes a payment history. IF you pay it off monthly, no payment history is establish. IN fact, it may not show up on your credit report if monthlys are not made. DO NOT be late on even one payment...remember, this is to get credit, not ruin it.
Once you have done that, you can get just about any credit...cars, whatever. But always, always pay regularly, ON TIME, every month. CC rates are high, but if you only carry 100.00 balance, no big deal. You will need to work up the limit over time. |

Many credit card companies have a secured-card program. Programs such as these require you to open a savings account at the bank which is used to secure the limit on your credit card. For credit card customers with no credit history, this is generally a 1-to-1 ratio, meaning, if you open a savings account with $100, you will get a $100 limit on your credit card.
Over time, with a good payment history, the credit card company will increase your credit limit without requiring additional deposits to your secured savings account. After a year or two, your savings account requirement may be removed altogether, as long as you don't go over your credit limit or make any late payments. |

Go to a department store and ask to get a store charge card. If you are working and have never declared bankruptcy, they will probably grant you a card. Then charge a purchase at the store with the card, and pay the charge card bill on time. Now you have a credit history, and can probably get a bank charge card, like a VISA or MC. |

You could have a checking account with a MC or Visa debit card, but debit cards do not report to credit bureaus. Like others have already said, you could try to obtain a gas CC or store CC and establish a positive credit history by using it and always paying the bill on time, preferably in full. The CC will report the stauts of your activity monthly regardless of whether you pay in full, make minimun payments, pay late, etc. Check out www.creditboards.com, there are alot of knowledgeable people on that site. |
