I have one credit card and excellent credit. Will getting a new credit card affect my credit score?

Additional Details
I have a balance of $1600. I have never been late with a payment and I have had it about 5 years and it is the only one I have. I want to transfer that balance to a 0% interest card that has travel rewards. My current interest is 9.9%.

Nope.

However if you have too many credit cards or creditors , meaning house mortage , car payments, store cards etc, then some companies may deny you credit on the grounds that you have too many creditors against your name. Although this will never affect your credit score directly.

Yes, my parents own a carlot and deal with credit daily. Each time you get a new credit card it lowers your credit just a lil bit each time. Also when they run your credit to get a new credit card drops your credit score just a bit as well.

It will increase your "potential debt". Because of your good credit history DO NOT close your existing account. Before transferring your balance contact your current company, tell them about the offer, and your potential intentions to transfer the balance. Depending on the company and your internal score with them, they may match the offer or give you something close to it. Also, other things you need to consider.....What is the interest rate after the 0% expires? After it expires if the rate is to high, what would the balance transfer rate be for your existing card? It seems very complex, but can save you a lot of money.

As mentioned in the previous reply, it will have an effect on your credit. How much will depend on your current credit history.

But generally, it is recommended that you have 2-3 credit cards, and use them occasionally. Keep the payments paid up and on time.

You many notice a very slight drop once you get the new credit card, but overall it will help your score.

Just one word of caution. If you get a card for the purpose of transferring your balance over, you MUST control your spending. DO NOT make the mistake of running up your first card again and going into debt. Too many people have been suckered into the credit card roll-over game, and end up maxing both cards out. If you can control your spending it's a great idea.

Absolutely. Everything you do creditwise will affect your credit...from getting a new card; using it or not using it; your balances; the types of credit you have; how old your credit is, etc.

There are five PRIMARY factors that determine your score:

1. The length of your credit history.

2. Your payment history (do you generally pay on time).

3. The proportion of your balances to your credit limit.

4. The types of credit you have (i.e., Mortgage loans, credit cards or car loans).

5. The number of new credit lines.

Generally speaking, the less you owe, the older your credit and the more you pay on time, the higher your credit score will be. Even if you do something to lower you score (i.e., spend money on your credit cards), the score is constantly changing, so as you pay off debt, and as events become older (i.e., late payments) your score will also increase.

Typically applying for and accepting new credit will begin to lessen the impact on your credit score after six months.

Good luck!

Depends on what you do with the 2nd credit card. If you keep the balance low, your credit score may improve because your 'available credit' has increased.

Baron Karza
No, it won't affect it negatively.

I am amazed at the amount of bad information people give out. I have been in credit/finance for over 10 years now. Please listen carefully.

Having another card, assuming you only have one will raise your score. The other card that you are carrying a balance on, how close to the limit are you? You need to keep it at or under 30 percent of the available credit line.

It DOES matter if you have one with 10,000 or 5 with 2,000 each. It WONT matter if the one with 10,000 has a 30,000 or more limit. Once ONE card goes over 30 percent , your score starts to decline.

Remember, always keep your balance, at or below 30 percent of the availble credit.

drinnt
It's not how many cards you have - it is how much outstanding credit dollars you have. You can have one card with a $10,000 line of credit or 5 cards with $2,000 each. The total you have in credit is how creditors guage your ability to repay debt. If you are concerned, ask your credit card company for the exact amount of credit you want. It is very important to manage your own credit, not just take all you can get. Caio. www.creditcards.com has great 0% cards.

mom-to-be
It depends, how long do you have with the one you already have? if is been over a year is ok to get a new one, but is you got it like a couple months ago i don't recommend it.

I work in mortgage i see how my clients mess up their credit in one week!

henners1979
Yes it will. Every time you apply for credit this is put on your credit record, which is managed by a company such as Experian. The odd application won't make much difference but if you make lots of applications in a short period of time this will adversely affect the way lenders view your applications.
The important thing about credit is never ever to miss a payment or be late paying, even if you only pay the minimum amount. These sort of events count against you.

poodiespet3
Yes it will improve it. Get a new one and use it minimally. Get something for like $10 and them pay it off. This will improve your credit score.
