Generally it takes 7 years for it to clear off your credit report.

The best way to start repairing your credit is to get a secured credit card through your bank. That's where you give them the money to hold, they give you a credit card in that amount, but then you treat it like a regular credit card - paying each month. You can also get a secured loan for something.

And just to warn you, if you paid even $1 on any of those accounts they stay on for 7 more years (after the last time you paid on them). I made the mistake and started paying on mine after 6 years, had I waited 1 more year they would have disappeared, but I tried to do the right thing and 13 years later they are still showing up.

It actually helps to use credit. If you do absolutely nothing, you will be in limbo.

Folks who extend credit prefer people who use credit wisely and pay on time (not early). If everybody paid early, Visa would go out of business.

Just use one account shrewdly. You'll get right after awhile.

You would have to try something like Capital One if you are in the UK but I wouldnt. Another way to increase your credit rating is to have savings

They should be dropping off your credit report over the next two years or so.
You can obtain your credit report at annualcreditreport.com, you are entitled to view your report free once per year.

I suggest going to your bank or credit union and asking about a secured credit card.
If thats not a good option for you, then find out about pre-paid credit cards from a bank or from a reputable credit card company, they might have some info on line. If I can find a link I'll come back & post it for you.

good luck!

I have a question. The credit cards you used to have have you closed the accts or are they still open but dormant. Just because you paid off a credit card or had your privelidge of using it away does not mean it is closed and when they pull up your credit report they see the credit cards listed and they don't want to give you another one.

What you can do to duck the system and clear your credit in enough time to get a card is to sign up w/ like Equifax (they are the most used) and then dispute all of the claims...they have 30 days to prove of remove these claims...once that is done your credit looks better...your score could still be low but this will help...

Have you tried applying for a small Capital One card? There is a banner on the front page Yahoo. Now, your credit is bad BECAUSE you haven't touched your accounts in 5 years, other reasons could be late payments on car loans or mortgage loans, as well as collections (usually medical). The question is, are your accounts still open? If they are, start using them and let them revolve, in other words, make a purchase, then pay it off, even small amounts, like for gas, this will bring your credit up pretty quickly.

As much as the seven year rule is true, your credit can improve drastically within six to ten months after you pay off any outstanding debts and make regular payments on current debts. I would get a card through your bank or through one of countless mailings that we all get. Only spend what you can repay by the end of the month. After you do this for a while, you will have good credit. I was a mortgage broker for a while and I've helped other people repair their credit. You can get a card, you just have to look around.

Just don't spend more than you have.
