I'll be watching this answer. Most non profit consolidation companies are scams but I know there is a government sponsored one that is legit.

and for this witch who responded about being tired of people who shirked their responsibilities.. what a piece of trash, you have no idea how people's credit got that way, all it takes is for a family member of yours to become very ill and you have to take vast amounts of time off of work for you to become in debt. That's all the world and yahoo needs is another self centered harlot running her mouth out of ignorance and hate.

ladymagictn
Good luck, mine is terrible to. So far i haven't found any solutions.

I'm afraid all of the previous answers are correct in part, you should contact your creditors and try to make more favorable payment arrangements, many will be receptive, it's in their interest to keep you paying. Even if it's less, better than nothing.
Also try to negotiate a lower interest rate on one credit card and consolidate your payments to it. But, don't use it as you pay it down. Your days pf cc usage are long gone for now.
Be patient!!! And for heavens sake, don't get discouraged, it may seem like you're not making progress; but the longest journey ever completed started with putting one foot in front of the other, and repeating the same till completion. Good Luck!!!

Bank of America is offering a credit card with a 99 dollar deposit and limit of 500

Small steps like paying your bills on time and using only part of the credit available to you. Also use your credit cards for making small payments regularly, so that it is reflected in your credit record. More tips available at http://www.acreditlibrary.com/buildcredit.html

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

Start by pulling your credit reports and disputing the information on them. Dispute the information as "not mine" only. You will be surprised at how many of the older negative entries will fall off.

Make your disputes by mail only and send all correspondence certified return receipt to create a paper trail.
You are allowed one free credit report each year from http://www.annualcreditreport.com.

The next step is to make settlement offers with the collections that were verified as yours.

Make an offer to pay for deletion only. If they are not willing to remove the negative entry from all three credit reports or say they will, but are not willing to put it in writing, leave the debts alone. They are on your credit report and the damage is done. Paying with out deletion does nothing but make your credit score worse. Remember that a collection is a collection, paid or not. Paying the debt with out deletion restarts the 7 year clock.

Important
Always make an offer that you can afford to pay. They will not accept payments and give you what you want, deletion of the negative entries.
If they are not willing to remove the negative entries or will not put the agreement in writing, forget about it. As time goes by, so will the negative impact of your bad entries.
Make all offers in writing, sending all correspondence certified return receipt mail only.
Do not talk to collection agencies on the phone and do not be intimidated by their language. They are in the business to make money and do not care about you or your situation.

Get a credit card. Charge things you would normally buy in a month and pay the bill in full every month. This will help you build your credit score. Check out the site below for information on what cards are good and what cards to avoid.

Aside from that, building a good credit score is a long term process. As they say a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. Beware of quick fixes. There are none except for the quick fix of getting into your wallet by way of a scam and there are some out there. Here are three sure fire ways to boost your credit score.

The biggest component of the FICO score is the percentage of available credit you are using. The traditional way of course is to pay down your accounts to improve the percentage. The higher the percentage the lower the score. There is another way.
1. ASK FOR CREDIT INCREASES. This achieves the same result-decreasing the percentage of credit used. Just be careful not to use the new found "wealth". That is like shooting yourself in the foot. Be careful not to ask for too much of an increase.
2. PAY OFF YOUR BILLS. Pay them off not when they are due but before they are due. Find the statement date (usually 20 or so days before the due date) and pay it off a day or so early. That brings your account balance to $0 thus increasing the percentage of available credit. If you pay the bill on the due date it will not have the same effect.
3. DON'T TOSS THOSE OLD CARDS. I found out about this one the hard way. If you are not using an old card for any reason do not throw it away. Take advantage of it and charge small amounts occasionally. This results in an active vs. and inactive status for that account. Active accounts are factored into the FICO scoring system-inactive accounts are not.

Using these three hot tips will boost your FICO score almost overnight. Take the knowledge and run with it and improve your score today.

make a appointment with a local college that offers credit management classes, contact the BBB in your city and see if they offer credit counseling classes.finally once you get a plan stick to it and you will be OK.

Work on paying them off, having credit that is NOT used counts for points. Don't open more credit cards becuase having too many isn't good. Installment loans are best for credit (ie car loans, mortages). Pay off your hospital bills or find a health insurance that my cover you (so you don't have hospital bills- high encourage you to do that) and see if there are any "forgiveness" programs w/ the insurance company where they could help w/ paying the old bills down. After you pay most of everything off a good way to build credit (IF YOU HAVE SELF CONTROL) is to take out a personal loan, set the money you got loaned in another account and pay back your debt w/ the money you were loaned. BUT YOU CANNOT USE THE MONEY FOR ANY OTHER REASON. Another good way to build credit is to buy a car, if you don't have one. Even if it's cheap ($3,000) it's a start. Your credit sounds low if your cards are closed out at $1000. It takes time. Good luck! See about a free financial advisor, some banks have them. Never pay someone though, it may be just a scam. Also go pick up some financial aid self help books from a book store or google articles about building credit and budgeting.

There should be free credit counseling services in your town - check the yellow pages.

We're working on rebuilding, too. The best thing we have done so far was learning to live without credit. We don't buy anything with the cards - if we can't afford it, we do without, even if it means eating rice and beans until the next paycheck comes. Yes, we actually did that. Now that we have better jobs, we have set up a debt repayment plan through Microsoft Money (if you have Windows, you may already have this) and are sticking to it religiously.

Good luck!

Get a credit card. Use it. Pay the majority of it each month but carry a little bit for a few months and pay off the rest. Start again. Credit companies lose money on people who pay credit cards off each month so they aren't as eager to increase your rating. They also lose money on people who don't use cards at all. If you show them that you will use their card, pay a little interest, and yet be responsible, they will slowly increase your credit rating. Always pay your bills on time, if not a little bit early. All your bills affect your credit rating (phone, electric etc...) If you make a big purchase (car etc...) pay it consistently on time. (You might need a co-signer)

Just call those you owe and make arrangements to make payments until all is paid off.

Just do it and get it over with!

You know I get really tired of people who have shirkled the responsibilities, never paid their bills and then all of the sudden want their perfect credit back! There is no way! Pay your bills and don't screw it up next time!
