They can access the info because the credit bureaus are NOTORIOUSLY SLOPPY. Be glad you're not Joe Smith or Jose Garcia you'd have a 500 page report.
This is one of the reasons you MUST get your credit report periodically and report their idiocy to them to get them to pull it. It's like pulling teeth--even when they're clearly wrong they fight you on correcting the BS in the reports.
If you go to annualcreditreport.com which is THE site you should use, you can get a free report annually. I recommend getting ONE from ONE company and having corrections submitted. Then in 4 months, get a different company's report. Repeat. (They all share info but don't seem too eager to correct errors.) And then 4 months later get the other company's report. This way you've got the BULK of the info creditors would see and you can deal, hopefully, with the big problems. Encourage your same name relative to do the same.
You've got to stay on top of these clods.

Credit rating agencies often make mistakes and it is hard to fix them. They should not confuse two people with same name because they have your social security numbers and they should be different.

To fix this get your credit report from all three of the big ones, review it, and file objections to all incorrect entries. By law they have 30 days to fix it or tell you why they are not doing so.

beanco
Did you ever live at that address - if so that is where the problem has more than likely arisen - contact Experian for a credit check and get it put right. You can have the first 30 days credit reports free and it can be done on line

There should be no confusion because it's based off your SSN. I'd call each of the major credit reporting agencies to check the have the information accurate that's tied to your SSN. Experian, Transunion and Equifax.

you have been linked due to the name. My (now) ex-husband and I had the same problem with being financially associated with his mother as we obviously had the same name but lived at different addresses.

We were refused credit once so we had to write a letter to the credit reference agencies and explain the family connection, but that there was no financial connection. This cleared it all up, no problems

desjr1967
I am a JR. Therefore my father and I have the same name. It does cause some problems but you have your own SS #. When you open accts. tell the about your anme and askif you can have a special code on your acct so they don't get confused. Good Luck

confucious says
you will have to inform the credit reference agency that you are in fact two different people and you will have to send a letter of disassocation so the link can be removed it is a very common procedure when the credit agency have checked he link will be removed almost immediately

edit in the uk they dont use your ssn OR NI NUMBER FOR CREDIT CHECKS

arklatexrat
They SHOULD be able to sort it out by address, SS#,etc. The key word here is SHOULD, and you are right to be concerned. You need to request a copy of your credit report and look it over carefully to make sure that they haven't overlapped your information with another person's in such a way that could damage your credit.

If you see anything you don't recognize, do an inquiry, send them a statement, whatever you need to do to set the record straight.

If I understood the last part of your question, it sounded like your relative checked their credit and some of YOUR stuff came up attached to his. If that's the case, he needs to do what I just explained to you to do. I don't know if they are liable for breach of confidentiality or anything for giving the relative access to your records by mistake--you might need to consult an attorney or credit counselor for clarification on this.

JSTUCKLY
They are to ss numbers but it could come up just like a background ck ( I see this a lot with backgrounds) you might want to call the credit companys they have a system where before they run your credit ck they call your house to make sure it is you. Try that it might help

Don't they use social security numbers in a credit check? I doubt that you share that. My ex use to have that problem with his father - matching names. His dad had credit problems. Get a copy of your credit report and have the credit reporting agency clear those problems up.

well if youre the same person yes... otherwise there should be some specific differences like d.o.b or like social security number, although im not sure how it works in the UK

just finished reading the question. thats mad weak sauce... id probably go change my name. Get a middle name or something or maybe get married. I believe in you.

The social security numbers should keep the two of you apart.

Aye. Right!
They certainly shouldn't, but, in this day and age, it seems as if anyone, can access any records, any time, any where.
I hope this turns out OK for you. ♥
