How much debt are we talking about? How difficult is it going to be for you to pay it off? Are you looking into buying something soon? Lots of questions, not enough answers.

As mentioned, this debt will drop off your credit records after 7 years, starting on the day of default. If you can wait that long, don't pay it and watch it go away.

Legally, after a certain time the Statute of Limitations runs out. Each state has a differant time length (many are 5-7 years for credit card debt). Check the link below for that information. If the creditors are threatening to sue you, they lose that right after this time. So, at this time you may not even have a legal obligation to pay.

If this advice doesn't help, and you still want to pay, a word of advice. Before you send these guys a dime, get it IN WRITING that they will remove the entry from your credit history, or change the listing to "paid in full, never late". Otherwise, the report will stay on your record, and your credit will still be ruined.

Remember, you are tying to fix your credit score. What is the sense of paying them, and still having a bad score? They can and will remove the listing. Do not believe them if they say they can't do it. It it legal, and that's the ONLY leverage you have on them. But get it in writing first.

Pay it all off. This affects your credit rating for another TWO YEARS.

If it were me, I'd pay. I'm not sure what you mean by suck it up. Do you mean just deal with the bad credit rating? If so, paying off the old debts would clean up your credit rating and you wouldn't have to deal with it either.

Depending on the loan type, a lot of mortgage programs will not require they be paid off since they are more than 2-3 yrs old now. I suggest that since they have already ruined your credit, call to settle for much much less. Just tell them your family member (dad/mom) is trying to help you avoid BK & you wanted to see if you could settle with them. All dad/mom can afford to give you is ____, will they accept that as settlment? Make sure they send you proof its settled & you owe them no more.

settle with them for future credit status.

1. If you pay these off, they will still be present on your credit for another 2 years. It will just say "paid as agreed" instead of being an open account. But they will 100% still be there.

2. Principessa is right - many credit grantors don't count debts past a certain number of years old. I work for a mortgage company and we do the same thing. Weird, but true.

3. Try disputing the items...it just might work and it only takes an email and 30 days. All of the credit bureaus have online dispute procedures now, so you dont even have to write a letter. Dispute them, not all at one, but a couple at a time, and see what happens.

4. If it still bugs you to have the items on there, do make sure you NEGOTIATE instead of paying the full balance. These collectors only paid pennies on the dollar for your debt and they definitely will deal if they think they will get any money back. DO NOT PAY FULL AMOUNTS!! Especially fees they tack on - interest, collection fees, etc. These fees are totally BS. And keep in mind....no matter what they say, they CAN change anything about how the debt is reported on your credit. They will lie and say they can't, but they can. So offer them 10% of the balance if they remove the item entirely from your credit. Then negotiate from there. Be strong!

You should definitely pay it off. I used to work at a bank and we had records of everyone we had written off. You will be able to open accounts and obtain credit in the future if you're not labeled as a "write off."

Pay it off. Should you ever buy a home the mortgage company will require that it is paid off before giving you a home loan. Better to have it paid off and your credit on the mend before that point.

First try to deny any bad patches in your credit reports. The credit agencies are not government controlled. They make money from your info. if the company you have a debt with doesn't confirm your dispute then the credit agancy has to take it off. That's the law!
