I just checked my annual credit report and I have a question I hope you can answer?
I still have some adverse accounts from the past. In other words, some medical bills that are in collections that I have not paid in years.

My question is, will the collection agencies be able to view my new address via my credit reports and begin harassing me again? I haven't received any mail from them in ages. The total of my accounts does not exceed $2500.

Thanks for your help.
Additional Details
I would like to add that since incurring these charges in my early twenties I have paid off a car and also a care credit card several times over.

The companies (if provoked) may be able to access your address and contact info--may. The issue is how you respond to their INITIAL contact. If you receive a telephone call, simply say that they have the wrong number and to never contact you again. If they mail you, the first time you should return it to sender via the US Post Office. The second time you should call the company via any contact info listed inside the communication and challenge the debt. Usually, it is not worth it to a collection agency to continue pursuing collection. Lastly, if you choose to attempt to have it removed from your credit report, challenge the debt via Experian, Transunion, and Equifax websites. They will launch their own investigation. The company will either say the debt is valid or remove it. If they remove it, problem solved. If they say it is valid, send them a letter stating that they have 30 days to remove it from your report or else legal proceedings will commence. Then, POOF, it's gone....I must add that I only know this info since I was a victim of identity theft and had to have SOOO MUCH removed from my credit reports.

I must also say that I understand your plight. They should not have charged you such a ridiculous amount in the first place...that's why I'm voting for Hillary Clinton.

My guess would be that if they haven't contacted you in years they probably gave up and are content to leave the adverse reports on your credit. I'm sure if they wanted to resume their collections they could easily get your address. That said, it's a little ridiculous to say they're harassing you when they expect to be paid as you would for services you provided. If you could pay cars and CC's, pay your medical bills too. A huge factor in rising medical costs nationwide is people who stiff the industry.

How old is the account?

Yes they can get your new address. However, if your collections are old, they may be falling off your report shortly anyway.

Inquiries come off in 2-years, credit cards & installment accounts come off in 7-years. Bankruptcy's come off in 10-years, tax liens can stay for as long as 15-years, judgments come off in 7-years after the judgment date, collections come off 7-years after the date of first delinquency.

In case 7 years have already passed and you are still getting harrassed:

Debts are often sold to another collection company right before the statute of limitations is about to expire and then the new company files and it reappears on your credit under the new name. This is referred to as re-ageing and is not legal.

What you may have to do is to get in touch with all three credit bureaus and dispute this information. They offer a 'letter of dispute' on their sites. They have 30-days to prove it is correct or they have to remove it.

They can get your new address and might contact you again. However, most junk debt collection companies know the debt is beyond the statute of limitations and cannot take you to court but will try and scare you into paying it.

If they call someday, do not speak over the phone or answer any questions. If you agree to make some form of payment, then you have re-set the clock on the debt and they will continure to hound you. They cannot sue you or get a judgement no matter what, if the debt is beyond your states statute of limitations.

Here are the legal reporting times for debt with Credit reporting agencies.

The credit bureaus keep your personal credit history for periods between 7 and 10 years:
Unpaid Tax Lien - Indefinitely
Chapter 7 Bankruptcies - 10 years from date filed.
Public Records - 7 years from the date of payment;
Closed or Inactive Accounts - 10 years from the date of last activity;
Derogatory Accounts - 7 years from the date of original delinquency;

The "easiest" way to resolve this problem is to pay the money you owe! (This may be easier even than you think, since the debt is so old, it has likely been sold to a third party for pennies on the dollar, so you may be able to get a "settled in full" statement for as little as $200-$300)

Until settled, such accounts never just "go away", someone somewhere will always be trading your outstanding debts.

Good luck...

I would contact the original account holder, and not the collection agency, and offer them a settlement. They will be happy just to get anything out of you...especially now. Saying you think you've paid enough is ridiculous...I feel I've paid enough on my car, that doesn't mean I don't have to finish out the loan. You complain about health care costs..but it's people like you who drive up the prices by not paying.

O'Papa Smurf!
Until you clear them...they will haunt you till the grave.....all companies are now outsourcing their collections to people that do not even have US citizenship....Spitzer, and Hillary are probably all for it!!!!!!

Problem with America......"I feel I paid my fair share of the debt"? If you didn't pay them what they charge, you haven't paid your fair share and need to honor you debts.
