Different lenders have different criteria for approving a credit card. Do you have long credit history? Are you currently employed/have been for a long time? Have you been shopping for credit (creditors see those inquiries for 2 years and get worried if they see a lot of inquiries)?

Did you get your FICO score? That is the gold standard for most lenders. You may want to go to myfico.com and buy a score from one of the 3 bureaus. It will also give you a breakdown of what is good about your score, and what can use some improvement. That will give you a good idea.

If you have credit cards, use them, pay them on time, and keep the utilization percentage low (balance vs. credit limit). These will continue to help you on your credit journey. If you do not have any real credit established, join a credit union and get a credit card through them (they usually offer very competitive rates, and are willing to lend to people with thinner files). Also, go to my favorite credit website www.creditboards.com/forums. It is chock full of good information about credit. I have learned so much from them, and have gotten some really great credit cards since joining, because of all I have learned. Good Luck!

Could be several reasons, you may not have been in the bureau long enough. You may have a high debt to income ratio. You may not have enough established history. You may have whats called a thin file.

I look at credit every day and see people every month that have 700 scores and can not buy a car because their score is made up of 1-credit card with a $500.00 limit paid 15-times and a couple of student loans.

Could be many reasons. Debt to income(how much you make vs. how much you have going out) is most likely. Could also be that you just dont have enough history built up yet, or not high enough credit built up(money wise, not score).

Just keep making all your payments on time while keeping low balances, and you should keep you credit rising.

Depends on how much and how long you have had credit...it may be good but if you havent had a long credit history or you have to much debt even thou you have paid on time that look at how much debt you have just in case you should get into a bind..also if you apply at a lot of different places everytime you apply some where it effects your credit score with to many inquires.

no credit is just as bad as bad credit....sounds strange but its true..........

A credit score is but one part of a credit rating. I've had customers with credit scores around 725 that I could not get financed on a car. It is possible to have one major credit card for 90 days and a $300 limit and acquire a 725 score. But without substantial credit history the score shows a potential lender that you've got very limited credit history and that you are off to a good start. But nobody is going to extend big credit with so small a track record. Keep doing what you're doing. It doesn't take long.

marcus79
they will look at your income and credit history. you can have a high score, but without any history you can still get denied. It's kind of a catch 22.

To start building trust among creditors, start with a credit card with a low balance. Once you've had a good relation with that company, you'll find out that you'll get offers more then you can shake a stick at.
