It is better to live without credit debt--basically I agree with your dad, because most people have a really hard time keeping it under control. But there may be times when you want to have a credit card. Look at the offer you are getting. If it offers an APR that is low (10% would be good) you might consider it. But if you decide to apply you should also commit to yourself that you won't use it instead of money.

You should also be aware that based on your credit history or lack thereof the card you are issued will probably not have a $5000 limit but maybe $2000 and they may even give you a different APR than the one offered in the ad. Check it all out carefully and if the APR is not the one they tried to lure you in with, make sure to request that they change it when you get the card. If you are not satisfied with the terms they end up offering you, cancel your account before you use it for anything.

Preaproved credit offers aren't as guaranteed as they say. Getting a credit card isn't always a bad idea but you have to be really careful, they aren't free money. If you get one don't get a 5,000 limit, you will kill yourself financially. Most people max out their cards. That's bad enough when it's $500 but the bigger the limit the more trouble you'll be in. If you are having financial trouble the last thing you need is a credit card. It will totally make it worse. Find ways to cut back your bills or do odd jobs on the side, or something. Don't borrow money.

Just because you got the application in the mail does not necessarily mean you will be approved for the card or that limit (you may get the card but the limit may be lower).

You need to establish credit, however getting a card because you need to pay bills will most likely get you in more trouble and further in debt.

You probably do not want to use a credit card to pay bills. Sooner or later you have to pay for these also. If they sit on your account, even if the account is current and you pay every month, but don't pay the account balance off, you will have to pay interest.

This will ultimately cost you more money. I would suggest getting more of your bills under control and then getting a card.

No. You definitely don't want to get into that situation. If you are having trouble paying your bills, a credit card will only solve your problem temporarily. What will happen is that you may get some paid for the month, but then next month those same bills will be back (water, electricity, etc.) along with your credit card bill. It's kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul. You're taking funds that really aren't yours (because the credit card company is lending you the money at a high interest rate) and paying for the bills. If things are really difficult for you, contact your local neighborhood services. They should be able to help you. We live in Texas and have a community service called Texas Neighborhood Services. They help people in times of trouble, like if you are unable to pay your electric bill and it is to the point of being cut off....things like that. Go ahead and throw that credit card offer away. It really doesn't help in the long run.

If you received one in the mail, then your old enough to have one. Go for it. Get caught up on your bills then have a little fun with it.

I've been paying off $1,500 debt since 2003 at 22% interest an I'm still $1,200 in debt!

Now go figure that out!
