I just got a call from a collection agency!?
I don't know what this could be for, because I didn't actually speak to this person, I just got a call from someone who called herself Mary at my work leaving several messages saying the matter was urgent with a claim number! The only thing I can think of is I have one credit card which I haven't made payments on for probably 6 months now, in fact to be completely honest, I just TOTALLY forgot about it!!! What do I do? What will happen!?
Additional Details
I do have money to pay for a debt that obviously I have created on myself... I can deal with the low credit score, but is that the worst that will happen if I do what is asked, is just pay what is owed in payments? I'm soo nervous, this has never happend to me :-(

Just call the credit card co and ask if it was assigned to a collection agency, If the answer is yes, ask if you could settle the account without calling the agency. If they refuse, just get the agencies number and call to set up a payment plan. If you do not know the number of the credit card co, run your free credit reports from annualcreditreport.co and call them toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. They should have the phone numbers on the reports.

First thing is that collection agencies cannot do certain things such as harrass you. Here is some googled info:
http://www.poorcreditgenie.com/answers.html

The 2nd thing is that if you can afford to pay the bill - i would go ahead and do so. The only problem is that if you have been delinquent for 180 days or more, this fact has already registered on your credit report and has already lowered your credit score.

if its a legit debt or not tell them not to call you at work. they cannot harass you while you are at work, if you want to talk with them call them back and try to get info on this debt( to whom and the amount) if you can afford to make a payment plan with them to become current and pay off this debt. you probably received letters of collection from them and they should be addressed, if not they will constantly phone (only allowed between 8am and 9pm in your time zone) working out a re-payment should stop any future fees, such as "late" "over limit"or other such charges. these may be waived if you agree to terms with them. Good Luck!

Something is not right here. you moved across country, did you fill out a change of address form with the post office? If so the bill would have been forwarded. In any matter they had your new work number? All this denial just does not add up. In the mean time your credit score is shot, you owe the original bill plus most likely hundreds in late fees, overlimit fees, and collection fees. If they decide to take it to court for judgment your wages can be garnished.

If "Mary" is not leaving any identifying information, I would not call back. It could be a scam. Call the credit card company back again, ask what your balance is and mail in payment. Make sure they have your current address and if not give them your change of address again. If you aren't worried about your credit score, what are you worried about? It's not like their going to reach through the phone and strangle you or something.

Telling It Like It Is
Hmmm...This sounds weird. Most credit collection agencies will first send a letter to you about how much money you owe them, what the interest is that has accumulated on your delinquent account, and how much time you have to respond or start making a payment.
I started off with bad credit because of a $300 charge that was left open for over 10 tears. A professional bank/credit agency should be the one to contact you via mail. You don't know who this Mary is - what company she is from (you should call the number back and ask whether it is your credit card company itself or a collection agency) and what she is following up on.
All legitamate credit companies and their claimers send formal letters to their clients to inform them of the deliquency so that the customer cannot say they were never given anything IN WRITING. When you call this Mary, ask that the company send you a formal legal letter of what your options are.
You should also get a copy of your credit reports to make sure this little blip isn't going to effect your chances of taking out a mortgage or a loan for that spankin' new house you want to buy (eventually).

Call them... there is a chance that they have added fees and penalties to it-

If you can pay the bill in one lump ask them what they would be willing to settle for- 20-50% is pretty standard-

Call them as soon as you can. Pay what you can. Ask them for a 'pay to delete' option so that your credit report isn't affected.

you forgot that you had to pay for 6 months?! hmm, i hate to tell you this, but your credit scores are going to take a huge hit. that's a 180 day delinquency, and that is very serious. now, if you tell them not to call you at work in writing, they can't. that's first and foremost. however, you need to find out if you are dealing with the original creditor or if it's been sold to collections. you also need to find out how much that you owe. if you have the means you should pay this off before it gets any further. before you pay one dime though, you should get everything in writing and get a debt satisfaction agreement and letter. this has already hit your credit though...and will be there for 7.5 years. you want to make sure that they don't decide to take you to court.

Call them back and set up a pmt plan.

Nobody "forgets" a credit card debt for six months.
