I just got a job at arbys im 16 my mom said i wouldnt be able to get a credit card because i have to at least
my mom said i wouldnt be able to get a credit card until i have had my job for at least a year is that true the reason i want a credit card is so i can build up my credit so i can get a car

Legally, you have to be 18 years old to have a credit card.

BUT! If you get an adult to co-sign you can get one. And you are absolutely correct in trying to get one at an early age. By the time you are ready to get a car, you will have established a credit rating. If you use that card regularly and be sure to pay your bills on time, you will have a good/excellent rating.

Length of employment will not have that major of an effect. And you will only be given a small credit limit until you get your history established (about 6 months).

I thought you had to be at least 18 to get a CC

i got my first credit card for the same reason, to build credit. using my credit card every month and paying every bill on time still didnt earn me enuf credit to buy things on my own, like a car. when i got my car, i still needed a co-signer...so its really not worth it simply to build credit...

A credit card is a legal agreement to pay, you cannot sign a legal agreement until you are 18, thus you cannot get a credit card, or a loan until you are 18

You need to be at least 18 before you can get a credit card. Best you can do at 16 is get a debit card off of a bank account you already have. If you want to buy a car, start saving money. You may not believe it, but right now you have the most disposable income you'll have for a long time. You've got very few bills and living expenses, so save your money! You're much better off paying cash for a car rather then turning 18 and trying to get a loan. Try E-bay. I got my car, and I know several other people who have gotten one there as well. My car was a steal- I got it for half its book price, in beautiful condition. Look around, and you may be able to find something reliable for very little money!

The legal age in the United States to obtain your own credit card is 18 years. (http://consumers.creditnet.com/Library/Credit_Card_FAQ/Im_under_18_Can_I_get_a_credit_card.ccfaq_003.php)

If your mom agrees, something she can do to help establish your credit is for her to add you to her credit card account as an "authorized user." You would receive your own credit card in the mail, with your name on it, linked to HER account. Even though it's not your own account, being listed as an authorized user does help your credit as long as your mom is prompted to give your social security number when signing you up.

You also will not be able to get a loan under the age of 18. Part of contract law says that contracts are not enforcible on someone who is a minor - therefore, no reputable institution will lend you money since they can't make you pay it back. The only exception to this is to have a cosigner, since they CAN be forced to pay if you default. Therefore, your loan is going to be based on the credit of your cosigner, not you.

Being listed on a loan will help your credit, though, as long as you do not default. This will be a big plus to help you establish credit.

You need to be 18 and even so they are not going to give you a card until you at least have a year in.

You need to be 18 to get any type of loan since you cant get credit by yourself before age 18.

*you* can't get a credit card on your own until you are 18.

With a cosigner, your bank might give you a card based on your mom's credit history. Your mom probably doesn't want the risk of having to pay your bills if you don't.

just get a debit card..you can use it on the internet if its a visa or whatever
but you have to be 18 to get a CC

what is your question? Anyways, if you're like most americans, you'll get your credit card, run into debt, and live the rest of your life trying to pay it off... surely you'll get good credit this way since they'll make tons on interest.

If you're not like most americans, you'll pay your bills at the end of the month.

Generally 3 months of stable employment is suffice, if that.

Don't be like most americans kid... good credit is only good if you're not slaving every hour of your life to pay the minimums

dont rush to apply for credit, yes you probably would be turned down because of your age and employment history also to the fact the banks are being more skeptic and careful these days about giving credit as the economy is not so well, and wait until you are more matured and dollar wise or if you dont by the time you reach 18 you may have awful credit if you are given it too early with not enough money management skills, better get it later and have it forever than get it too early and loose it for a while for an awful long time to come

they have given out usable credit cards to dogs... yes DOG's

so long as your history shows you pay your bills on time.. thats all they want to see. If you have no history you will require some form of an investment to show that your responsible enough to have a credit card. to ensure your accepted buy a GIC or some form of secure investment.

Gefilte Girl
Being 18 has nothing to do with it, they send applications to babies and pets for God's sake. I'm not sure you'd be able to show enough income to qualify, so I wouldn't worry about it yet.
