Start at your bank and then a trip to a local credit bureau.

fdm215
I would also recommend you pull a copy of your credit report immediately! Make sure no one has used your name/info to open another credit card...

If you are in the contact one of the three credit bureaus:
Experian.com, Equifax.com, TransUnion.com

You can request one free report a year from each of them.

Identity theft, dude....better get a pen and paper and the phone and start making some calls.

MOM KNOWS EVERYTHING
If you don't have a credit card, and you don't do business with the company that sent you the letter, then I would immediately notify the company that they have the wrong person. Is there an account number of any kind on the letter? I would get as much information from the company as possible, in case someone is using your identity to set up accounts in your name. Then you should probably get a copy of your credit report and see what's on there.

SYJ
If you have a bank account go and see them. If not get on to the people whose account you have/not paid for goods you know nothing about. If no satisfaction with any of them give the local police a call and explain what has happened.

The letter you received in the mail ought to have a telephone number you can call to ask questions about the account or regarding the bill. Call and speak to a person, since you are technically the 'credit card holder' they say that was being used as a form of payment ask what the card number was and if it was Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.

With that information I would first check your debit card and see if it matches because even though it is a 'debit' card they can also go through as a credit card. It comes out of your account just the same.

If it still does not match call the main corporate Visa, Mastercard or whomever the company was and ask them to look up who the card was for. If it is you they will tell you, if not you will have to call the original company that sent you the letter and file a fraud claim.

Hope that helps, good luck :-)

p.s. Be really careful that the letter you got is actually legitimate and not some scam trying to get your personal information. Double check phonenumbers with the actual websites of the company.

Is there a phone number on the letter you received? Call them and find out what it's all about..... I'd say it's probably a scam trying to get you to call them and give them a credit card number...if you didn't buy anything from them...and they didn't get any money from you...Your not out anything. I'd probably contact your bank...let them know about the letter you received, and that any charges from them would be unauthorized. Just remember...don't give anybody any numbers...and if you don't own a credit card..then you probably have nothing to worry about....the scammers didn't get to you!

Start with your bank!

evanlah
contact the company that you got the letter from. you could be the victim of identity theft. if it was an email, i would say ignore it, but because it was an actual letter that came to you, you really should check it out. good luck....cuz that could be a mess~!

Could be a case of identity theft. Definetly check with your bank and the company that sent you the letter.

bitchprincess456
Start with your bank . Go in and ask about the transaction trying to be taken out. Then call the creditcard company and ask them about who got the card and what was ordered. You may have been the victim of an attepted identity theft.
But, do not give out any of your information until you are sure of what is going on. See if your bank can help you sort it all out.
Call the company which was trying to obtain payment and ask what for, and ect. ask all the questions you can obtain all the info you can, report it to police if it turns out someone was trying to obtain something in your name.

In addition to all the above, report this to your states attorney generals office... One of their main functions is to run down these type of scams. Contact all three national credit bureaus and get a credit hold put on your name and SSN until you make sure there isn't a bigger problem with identity theft.

dustiiart
If they are asking you to submit information to pay whatever this is with another credit card, bank card or check/money order... check the invoice over verrrry carefully and try to locate a telephone number. If there is one, call and find out if you can uncover exactly what you "supposedly" bought...if it absolutely isn't something that you ordered/received, consider this bogus and basically a scam. You can if you wish inform them that you have never ordered such, nor does the name of their firm mean anything to you. Further you do not own this particular credit card that they've indicated. You will be reporting them to the local offices in your area that are responsible for investigating mail fraud.

If there is no number, address or contact info...you could search the net for the name...just because there is no website (if that ends up being the case) doesn't mean they aren't a real co., however, the facts that no number, address or contact info added to no web presence spells S-C-A-M

Don't worry about it...check with your bank and inquire about this particular card they are talking about...if it isn't your card the Bank will be able to determine if it is another client's ... they won't give you that info fully, they can possibly tell you it is issued to someone else. Explain the issue and this will serve as warning to the bank to be on the look out for suspicious activity with other clients credit cards.

Good luck with this...once you've accomplished all your checks and balances....don't worry about it, they can't ruin credit of a person they are scamming.

I had this happen while I was in business...unusual invoice billing for office supplies...we never ordered from that particular co., and in my investigation determined it was a bogus scam company...between my complaint and others in the area we had the business busted.

Good luck with this...as long as you are positive (and have checked everything out) that you owe this company nothing, you should have nothing to worry about.

This is a scam! These crooks blindly send out hundreds of these in hopes some one who gets one will have that credit card and have done business with that company. They then ask the person to give them there credit card number and other information, supposedly to "verify" and to help straighten things out.

They then use your credit card number and/or your personal information to charge things to your credit .

This is very common. NEVER give anyone your personal information on line or over the phone. These people are masters at making you think they are from your bank or some well known store. They even have websites that look exactly like real ones. I recently saw one that was just the same look as my bank.

Sadly there are literally thousands of very crafty snakes out there trying to steal your hard earned money.

MacBraveheart
You have to first contact the company by telephone to establish WHAT you are supposed to have ordered and HOW.

Then you have a better chance of knowing if, perhaps, SOMEONE go the wrong end of the stick and even made a mistake on an order you DID place.

:-)

I have had email or letters before now ranting about stuff I didn't think I had ordered. Turned out that ONE company I HAD ordered something with were not the actual company the item was from! They'd passed it on and with that my details and so the second company seemed unknown to me.

So- contact them and ask what it is about.

THEN you know what you are supposed to have bought and with that information you can also work out WHAT method you are supposed to have used.

What DOES occur to me due to you not HAVING a credit card, is that this MIGHT be a hoax. That means that EITHER:

1. The company is "phishing" for your data and want you to "correct" by telling you some fictional information they have supplied in the letter is wrong in the hope you will phone up and say "hey- but my number is ###### and not the one you have been trying" and then they have access to private info, or-

2. Someone is trying to steal your identity to make purchases with fictious information they HOPE will get the goods released and sent to, even, an alternative delivery address.

Either way- treat it seriously because of its incorrectness.

Contact the company, establish WHO they are without giving your personal information (and NEVER EVER EVER bank and/or card details even if YOU don't have one. Someone else reading this might have?).

Then ask them to provide you with more info about the alleged transaction and then take that to your bank.

Your bank may not have any knowledge of this ATTEMPTED transaction (and particularly if you do not HAVE a card!) so no point asking them. They would also refer you to the company in the first instance. But WITH the information you can approach them and ask for support or advice about how to protect yourself from something like this!

For future reference- if someone is trying to BE you then I'd worry- do you ever get credit card or other unsolicited mail which has your full, and correct name which you bin without destroying? Any bills or utility bills which go into the bin without being shredded can be used to "become" you so BE CAREFUL!

Good luck.

Sounds like physhing. It is an attempt to get your bank account #. Call your bank, now.

contact your bank immediatly, tell them what is going on and get the information from the card. Then call the credit card company and tell them that it is identy fraud that you never opened that account. you might have to file a police report. and contact experian and have a red flag put on your name so whoever is using your identy cant open any more accounts.
